MNers in France - quick question

We’re off to a France (Nice) for a break. We’ve been many times, know it like a second home.

DD is 10 and very responsible, although her French is pretty poor. She asked to be allowed to go to the boulangerie on her own in the mornings, to pick up breakfast for the family. It’s a very short walk to our flat. She has a mobile phone. I would go with her the first few days and introduce her to the boulangere so they’re not surprised to see her alone the next day.

I want to encourage her to become more autonomous, so this seems like a good idea. We live in Asia, she doesn’t get many occasions to run errands here. She’s going to secondary school next year and has been on school trips abroad.

However, would a 10 year old alone be frowned upon by locals? Should I worry about her safety? We haven’t been to Nice since the events of July 2016, so I’m not sure whether it’s got a different vibe now.

Thanks in advance

I think she would be absolutely fine.

I think it would be absolutely fine. In fact, i think they will love it!

My sister lives near Nice. Her children have been going to the boulangerie in their village by themselves since they were about 7!

Great, she’s very excited. ☺️ Thanks for the advice.

Yes, as others have said she'll be fine. My son is ten, we live in Brittany and he's been going to the boulangerie alone for years. They will likely make a big fuss of her.

I think she will be fine, and she might even be able to practice her french or meet some other local children while she is on her way.

We used to go to France every year as children and it was my job to go to the boulangerie. I loved it. It sparked a lifelong love of French and I now have a French degree and lived in Paris for a few years. Do it!
