Luxembourg move questions

Hi, hoping someone can help. I'm considering a move to Luxembourg, office is in Senningerberg. What are nice areas near there to live? I have a 7 year old, a 5 year old and a two year old. We cannot afford private schools so a good state school is essential. My kids only speak English currently. Dh will stay at home with kids so an area that's nice for stay at home parents would be great. It would also be great to be near parks and playgrounds and safe cycling areas (is cycling big there)? Thanks so much in advance.

There are nice areas right near Senningerberg. Will you have two cars?

Hi Maria Novella

I would prefer to run just one car but we could consider two.

If you only want to run one car, either you need to live within walking/bus distance of work or you need to live in the city. Your husband, if he is a SAHP, really needs transport! That might be public transport but it would be much better if he had a car. Living in Luxembourg you will find that friends are quite scattered between villages and suburbs.

Oberanven and Niederanven are good places to live.

Thanks. Yes, the plan would be for me to commute via public transport. Assuming we run two cars, what areas would you say are nice and within reasonable commuting distance? Thanks again. I will check out the two areas mentioned above. Smile

Sennigerberg is a nice area from what I've heard. I think there is maybe even a cycle path from there to Kirchberg...?

Our kids are in the local state schools and we have been happy so far. They are young enough that they haven't had a problem picking up the languages, though obviously each child is different. If you're worried about the languages, though, there is also a free European school in Junglinster that has an English section. Not sure on the specifics of which ages the section is open to, but might be worth exploring. Junglinster isn't too far from Sennigerberg (it's on the right side of the country anyway) and is quite an international community does have all the basic bits you need (food shopping, petrol stations, restaurants, etc), though you'd probably want a car living out that far. The good news is that there is a direct bus between Junglinster and Sennigerberg so maybe your DH could take the bus in the mornings and you could have the car.

Niederanven is lovely (closer to Sennigerberg) and has quite a big international mix. Niederanven itself has pretty much everything you'd need on a daily basis to survive, including a swimming pool, which would make life easier if you wanted to be a one car family. I've heard good things about the local school there.

There's a good facebook group if you're planning to go with the public schools in Lux, and you might find some helpful opinions and experiences with specific schools there.

Oops, sorry, have just twigged that it's you who will be commuting and your DH who will be home. Apologies for the mix-up!

When deciding where to live its a toss up between being car dependent and having a huge house. If you're willing to be car dependent you can get a spacious place but then you'll have to taxi the kids around. I'd recommend maybe bonnevoie or hamm if you're working in senningerberg then you could drive and your hubby and kids could bus. There are local schools that teach through english you could check those out.
