Ah, wouldn't it be lovely to be under the blue skies of Aus? Problem is, not being trained in a 'shortage occupation' it is looking IMPOSSIBLE to get there unless one of us retrains as a welder (or somesuch).

Before I rule out emigration to Aus entirely, has anyone achieved it from a tricky starting point, ie no close family there, not on shortage occ list, no vast Swiss savings account... etc etc

(I realise this is a huge issue, I realise I can look at resources online but I need some HOPE! Or a good dose of realism so I can put all thoughts of Aus out of my mind for once and for all.)

I've been reading this site as DH is discussing a possible new job in Australia. We'd be work sponsored though (as far as I've been able to work out the whole visa thing).

JumpShip · 15/06/2007 11:07

Thanks, I'll add it to my list of Favourites. Need to find out whether this is a realistic option, where to get advice?

JumpShip - I would go with what Shrinking VIolet has said and visit www.britishexpats.com , there are tons of people on there all with differing experiences and you can search for threads so you may be able to find people who have already posted the same questions that you want answering or can start a whole new thread of course!

I am sure you have already looked but also www.immi.gov.au is a good starting point for all the info on visas and ways in.

I did it the easy way - married an Aussie. I think you can go in and set up a business but have to have masses of money to do it with but I could of course be wrong - try the expats website, someone will be able to help on there - give me a wave when you are there, I am RachelH (different website, differnet names, its all so confusing!!)

JumpShip · 15/06/2007 11:53

Ohhh, Harrogate mum, I quite openly ENVY you! I will explore that site much more now. I have a feeling it will involve too many sacrifices to get there but I have to know!

there is the option to go on a student visa and do some training when you are over there but I think you can only work 20 hours a week or so and if you have kids you have to pay for their schooling (at least thats what I think, dont quote me).

Anyway try the website and also have you contacted any migration agents, I am sure they would be able to help you as a first point of contact on whether there is any hope for an application.

JumpShip · 15/06/2007 21:16

Thanks, good idea about the agents, I expect that's the logical first step.

We're currently in Thailand en route to Sydney. It took us 18 months in total to get those elusive permanent residents visas in our passports and it was only possible because DH's job is on the demand list. If you're not fussy where you go there are ways of getting in - if you want Sydney (like we did) it is extremely difficult. The best thing would be to talk to a good agent about your exact situation (age, education, work experience, family etc.) - the immigration rules are all changing in September so it's all a bit up in the air at the moment. British expats is definitely the best place to go for advice and support and quite a few reputable agents post there as well. Good luck.

redhotdiva · 02/07/2007 14:35

why dont you look on the expat website
google
british expat site

you could go over on a student visa study hairdressing/chef and then be poss stay pr however you cant work and you would need funds for fees and living allowances.

we are going to perth in november on a 457 visa then in2yrs we can apply for pr

redhotdiva · 02/07/2007 14:37

if you go on british expats i am hitchcock71

Ziggy3 · 03/07/2007 20:07

Hi There
Have just returned from living in Sydney. Met loads of people with similar prob as Jumpship and they came in the 'Backdoor'. Apparently it's much easier to get pr for New Zealand. Then all NZ'ers have automatic living/working rights for anywhere in Australia - or so I was lead to believe - good Luck!

dejags · 03/07/2007 20:27

We achieved it.

Neither DH or I have a degree
We have no family in Aus
Neither of us work in an career which is in shortage in Aus

The first thing we did is get ourselves a top-notch Immigration Consultant (based in Australia)

The second thing we did is ensure that every piece of paper that we needed was submitted as requested, with every T crossed and every i dotted.

We are now in the final stages of the process - we have had a request for medicals and Penal Clearance Certificates, so it's the home run for us.

If I can offer any particular advice eg the name of our immigration consultant, feel free to CAT me.
