Do you ever get this feeling living overseas?
The last trip back to the UK has left me feeling homesick and wondering what I’m doing living thousands of miles away. I was having an uneventful weekend , I went to yoga , drove to the supermarket in the car , no plans for the evening and it hit me that I could do this at home in the UK - I feel like I should be living this great life making the most of what NZ has to offer to make it worth missing my family and old friends and my kid not having more family in her life.

Yes, Trying the UK for a year, I think that is the way to approach it. But it is quite daunting . I think that the first year as an immigrant is not easy , you are trying to find the right jobs. the right place to live , it takes a few years to build contacts and make friends. I know it won’t be as easy as swapping our life here for a similar one in the UK. It took us a good few years to settle here.

Even on MN you get snotty comments on being an expat and daring to comment on UK politics, or daring to retain a house there, as if you should be grateful to be away. It is however, same shit, different place, in a different language.

I am moving back to UK next year when dh retires (finally, and for the second time) after being away since 2006. I am really looking forward to it, although I will have to find a job, and we will have far less money.
