Buying s property in Spain

Wondering if anyone has some advice.
MDH and I are thinking to buy a property in Spain. We'd ideally like somewhere big enough for the growing family to be able to come stay in once in a while also.
I'd originally liked Palma de Mallorca but I'm thinking that perhaps mainland Spain is a better option so that we can drive or take the train to other destinations in Spain.
Anyone offer some advice regarding areas to look at?
I've heard that some towns almost pack up during winter, so I'd prefer somewhere that stays vibrant even during the winter months ( locals or expats ) I know there are issues regarding Spanish tax so we'd look into having a lawyer help out. I think as long as we're not spending longer than 180 days there we should be okay.

The ETIAS might make moving in and out of the Schengen zone more complicated.
ETIAS similar to the USA ESTA is due to be introduced in 2020. It is suggested that it will cost €7, last for three years and can be used for multiple trips. Those with a criminal record may not be excepted.Britains would not have needed an ETIAS to visit the Schengen zone while Britain was in the EU.

I would rent before you buy or at least check out areas in person and bear in mind that Spanish property isn't a guaranteed investment. People lost huge amounts on property here in the crash and in many areas the market are only just recovering. Taxes on buying and selling are also high and eat into any profits.
Mainland is so diverse and offers everything from beaches to skiing. For year round activity cities or the busiest costas (C del Sol and C Blanca) are probably your best bets.
