Can someone please explain to me why in the UK separate taps for hot and cold water in the bathroom are still very common??? Just curious.

sibble, that's true - we changed the hot water system in our house (before we moved in thank goodness) and found several dead bats in the tank.
A friend had really yucky-smelling hot water and eventually discovered a dead squirrel in her tank (after trying to find out what was wrong with the water for weeks - urgh)

it took the UK a long while to catch up to the plumbing standards of NA. Actually, they haven't quite caught up yet. There are standard plumbing items in a N. American home that are considered something unusual in the UK. NA has regulators for multiple people taking showers at the same time. Most houses here have three bathrooms, new builds five, little high pressure sprayers at the sink are standard, garbage compactors are a commonplace.

plumbing is def a north american specialty.

expat - you can get screens now, we've got one in the bathroom for the insects, certain times of the year it's awash with little green bugs and moths, or seed fluff from trees. Spoils the window a bit, but its v clean.

And seperate taps v v archaic imo. I hate having to wash my face and go back and forth between hot and cold. Can't wait for our new bathroom to be fitted!!!

We have 3 bathrooms, a spraying kitchen tap, and a waste disposal, Daddycool. Right here in heart of Engerland.

DaddyCool · 18/05/2007 20:55

yeah i'm just saying it's less common.

DaddyCool · 18/05/2007 20:56

and those things tend to come as standard over here.

hana · 18/05/2007 21:30

and some houses in the uk are still without central heating
I do find that shocking

i guess at the end of the day, it's the things we're familiar with v unfamiliar when we live abroad. we have mixer taps in all sinks here in nz but 30 mins outside Auckland we have tank water, septic tanks, no mains gas, only recent broadband, frequent power failures and 2 log fires (no central heating) I thought I'd moved to the 3rd world

I find the wierdest (most annoying) thing is not having apower point in the bathroom!! Drives me nuts! Why Why Why!???

Hana, where do you get screens? Please let me know.

Also, screens don't have to be ugly. In fact, the ones we had in Scottsdale were practically invisible...so much so that peple kept walking into them.

As for nets, well it's 2007, I'd prefer to get the invisible screens..they might reach England in 100 years or so. (They'll be here sooner if the Global Warning gets any worse and you all get the bugs too. I bet you won't mind them if you get lots of bugs.)

That's what I was trying to say...no screens and no bugs..no problem. However, England has bugs. My aunt was stung by a wasp in our home last summer and had to go to A and E. We have to use our A/C because we can't keep our windows open and the exterminator says the wasps are from next door, but the neigbors won't do anything about it. They're only a problem when it's hot and only on the sunny side of the house.

Daddycool...why did you remind me about garbage disposals??? Now I miss them again. Joking.

Scienceteacher, where did you get your disposal? I've had several people give me blank stares when I asked about them. Nice that you have them.

I remember the first house we bought in the US cost nearly $45,000 less because it was the only house on the street that didn't have a dishwasher and a disposal...We got the good deal, and then added the items. Too bad the previous homeowners didn't know to just add them and make more $$.
