Shipping belongings abroad

How exactly does this work?
Can you ship any personal/household type items?
Can you ship bicycles?
Does the cost depend on size of container or weight?
Can you have belongings shipped door to door?
How long does it take?
Are things likely to go missing?
Do you have to buy/rent specific containers, or will any old cardboard box do?
Is there anything else obvious that I would need to consider?

Sorry for all these daft questions, as you can see I know absolutely nothing about this!

I would be shipping from the midlands to thailand btw

You can ship almost everything. It all depends on how much money you have to spend on it.

We've moved two and from the US twice, and here is our experience:

Any personal/household items - yes, the who lot. The only thing to leave out is booze if you don't want to pay duty (and more importantly a customs inspection of your load), and anything that's considered hazardous.

Bicycles - no probls

Cost is dependent ont he size of your container (or the amoutn of the container that you are sharing) for sea shipments, and the weight for air shipments,

Yes, door to door is normal. The folks who do the sea shipment will have agents who do the land parts. You shouldn't have to worry about this.

Timings: we found that translantic was one week from port to port

Missing: no, short of a major catastrophe. You wax-seal your container, and it's not opened again unless customs in your destination needs to open it.

There are specific standards for international shipping. Everything is individually wrapped.

Other things to consider is how will you live while your goods are in transit. It takes 3-4 days to pack up a house for international shipping, and you are pretty much out of the house on the first day. If you are going direct to your destination, you need to either stay in a hotel, or rent furniture and kitchen goods to tide you over for a few weeks. There are companies that specialise inthis kind of rental.

How exactly does this work? Depends how much and where to . Removal companies often have part-filled lorries/conmtainers to which you can add your load onto if a small drop or you fill a truck/container as if you are moving in this country.

Can you ship any personal/household type items? Most - not inflammables and different countries have import restrictions and customs duties levied

Can you ship bicycles? yes

Does the cost depend on size of container or weight? Usually volume unless airfreight or unusual

Can you have belongings shipped door to door? Yes

How long does it take? Depends where to - Europe can be less than a week, Australia can be months

Are things likely to go missing? Not normally on a whole container as it is only opened at borders and destination. We have lost the odd bag or items somewhere along the line though. Insurance covers it.

Do you have to buy/rent specific containers, or will any old cardboard box do? Most international removal companies will supply cartons and they may insist on packing if they have to itemise the load for customs

we're shipping stuff mid-june back to the UK from Canada. Cost is crazy and it's mostly down to the fact that they need to get their own guys to pack everything for insurance reasons.
