what typically English/ British sweets and treats?

I've been away too long I guess, I don't miss anything, or I don't remember what I miss...

I'm going to London in a couple of weeks and want to bring back typically English/ British sweets or chocolate or biscuits or something to share at work and college on my birthday (tradition of birthday person being the one to bring stuff in, and I don't want to bake because I get back late the night before, have an exam at college and work straight after college on that day Sad). There's a reason I definitely want to bring English/ British treats to share though...

What sweets/ treats do I buy in London to share in Germany? I honestly can't think of anything, the only things I bother acquiring online or bringing back these days are teabags, but I assume I'm just jaded!

What sweets and bought food snack treats do you miss?

Tea cakes, snowballs and jammie dodgers always go down well when I send a box of British treats to my friend in Hamburg

What is this "Frys" of which you speak? I've never seen that brand in the UK, is it specific to one region?

Oh you must have seen them, maybe the name isn’t ringing bells.

Battleax · 17/05/2018 04:27

You must have seen Fry’s. Maybe it’s just the name that isn’t ringing bells?

Hi OP

I have often brought back M+S coffee and walnut cake and their Victorian sandwiches as they always travel well.
But the thing that always goes down beautifully are fondant fancies - you get a tiered cake stand and put them on it - and for whatever reason, with a pot of tea, Germans go gaga for them even though personally I only like the yellow ones
You can get them from Mark's or 3 for 2 in Tesco - just check the dates and buy several. Less hassle than doing a cream tea.
As you say, you can get shortbread, cadburys, Maltesers etc now so not worth it...midget gems won't beat gummibears and not sure the synthetic picknmix will go down that well here but Terry chocolate orange is always a safe bet.

Fry's are chocolate with a cream filling of some type or chocolate covered Turkish delight. It is an old but smaller brand.

Frys is quite old fashioned now (but delicious). I don't remember the last time I saw one TBH
