Germany - kids health question

School age offspring thinks she has worms. Blush None of us have ever had them before. Does anyone know if, in Germany, this is one of those things pharmacists won't dispense medication to clear without a prescription from a doctor?

Typically our Hausarzt isn't open this afternoon and next week is Sportwoche school residential trip Shock

Hi, I think they might have treatment at apharmacy and also hand that over. Hope your dd gets better quickly!

Thanks. I just tried to phone the Hausarzt and they are actually closed all day.

Guess I'll phone the pharmacy now, as it'll take an hour to physically go there and back which will be annoying if they say they won't dispense unless a doctor writes a prescription. Joy, phoning to talk about worms...

I'm sure I heard or read that pharmacists can't sell the medication without a prescription here, but I can't think where I heard or read it, so perhaps I am misremembering! I hope so!

Bloody hell... Yep, you can buy it over the counter - 96€ for enough to do 3 kids Shock

Can you phone any other - I think if your Hausarzt is closed, they need to tell you where to go instead?!

It's ok, I bought it and can reclaim from the health insurance with a prescription apparently. We're rural and I really don't want to spend what could easily amount to several hours driving about, especially as DS has a football match at 4 and the sky will fall in if he isn't available...

I'll take a kid to the doctor when they're open and it's convenient next week for a retrospective prescription.

I'd have bought for the whole family but they only had enough in stock to cover the kids. Mixed blessing given the price!

I'll be in the UK in a few weeks, wonder if it's worth buying something in boots as an insurance against a next time!

It is good that the Krankenkasse accepts prescriptions, maybe your Hausarzt can give you two: one for the Krankenkasse to reclaim and one to treat the whole family (or to have for next time). I am glad it is sorted so far - enjoy your weekend!

When I lived in Germany my English friend used to get her mum to send it to her from England.

exexpat · 11/05/2018 12:17

That is ridiculously expensive! Definitely worth picking up a few packs of Ovex (pills or liquid) when you are in the UK - over the counter, and way cheaper than that. Once a child gets worms they seem to come back with depressing regularity so you may well need treatment again.

I'd rather pay several hundred € out than deal with the epic saga my mother would create out of me asking her to send me worming medication Suburban - she made such a meal out of being asked to buy me an M&S nursing bra ten years ago, before they delivered to Germany, that despite having her never actually managed to purchase, let alone send, one I was still being reminded of the great lengths she'd gone to and the conversations she'd had with shop assistants after the baby had started walking... Asking for tea bags didn't go much better... I no longer ask for anything on principle and haven't done for years ShockGrin but I can see that would be practical for some people Smile

Ovex? Thanks exexpat I'll check that out. Any idea on the cost for enough for a family of 5 do you think? More in the £20 region? I guess here it would have been nearer 200€ if I'd bought for all of us, as the dosage is per 10kg...

Blimey I just googled - under a tenner for a family pack to treat 6 people!

I wonder how the ovex dose is 5ml for anyone over 2, but here the dose varies vastly by weight, so a 70kg adult takes 7 times as much as a 2 year old...
