DC - I thought you had only just gone off to canada?

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 15:42

i gave it a year. it's been a year.

hellish · 16/05/2007 19:21

Hi, I moved to Canada with my family nearly a year ago and we love it.
We have just got our permanent residents status after two years, (had temporary visas before that) - But my dh had had a job here already so our application was fast-tracked I have heard it can take 3 years.
You will need to find out if you have enough points for immigration. Have you looked on the canada government website?

\link{http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/}

There is an online test you can do to see if you have enough points.

BettySwallocks · 16/05/2007 19:23

Do they speak English over there?

hellish · 16/05/2007 19:24

Ha, just about, my two ds are now asking to go to the "washroom". Actally French is equal official language and we if you live in Quebec almost only French is spoken, here in Ontario everything in English but lots of French in schools.

BettySwallocks · 16/05/2007 19:26

Why would they speak French in Canada? You confuse me. Do you mean you live in France?

hellish · 16/05/2007 19:29

No, Canada has two official languages - French and English - Many parts of Candada FRench is first langage, we went to Quebec on holiday - it was just like being in France, resturants, culture etc.
There are all French schools here, even in my ds school the kids have the option of French Immersion - where ALL teaching is in French (even PE!!)

BettySwallocks · 16/05/2007 19:31

So does noone speak Canadian then?

There is an American man on Mumsnet but I can't understand what he is saying.

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 20:44

careful y'all, Betty is a namechanging troll man.

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 20:48

i think it is rhubarb. whoever it is, he/she is making me

ktmoomoo · 16/05/2007 20:48

have relations in ontario ,edmontun and saskatchewan really want to go to see all of them it looks wonderful over there

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 20:52

i'll be honest, i'm not keen on it. i'm finding it a bit dull.

I'm in Ontario. I prefer the UK. I think the UK has so much going for it but houses are very cheap and big in comparison and crime is very very low outside the cities.

ktmoomoo · 16/05/2007 20:55

where abouts in ontario are you if you not mind me asking

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 20:56

About an hour's drive east of Toronto - Cobourg. Lovely town and everything but we're returning to UK in June.

ktmoomoo · 16/05/2007 20:58

its a real shame you not like it out there ill do you a swap lol

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 20:59

yeah. I'm actually Canadian but I've been in the UK for the past 10 years. There are so many highs and lows about both countries. It's difficult to make a decision. Canada has it's fair share of problems and downpoints as well.

You feel a little cut off here.

ktmoomoo · 16/05/2007 21:01

my relations are over here at moment and say they love it here but miss home

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 21:05

I think the decison to live in North America or the UK is very specific to your personal circumstances and priorities.

for instance, if i was struggling to get on the property ladder in the UK, being young and frustrated with the huge house prices, I would probably opt for Canada. Also, if you much prefer a quiet life (and that is what you will get here unless you live in the inner city) then Canada may be for you.

I could rant about the high and lows all day... but i won't

ktmoomoo · 16/05/2007 21:06

go on lol you know you want to lol

NotQuiteCockney · 16/05/2007 21:11

It's quite provincial, ime. But in ways that might be interesting and sweet if you're not from there.

(I'm from Canada, been in the UK for 11 years nearly, I think. Don't think I'll ever go back.)

hellish · 16/05/2007 21:13

Hi, hellish here, yes I had a feeling betty might be a bit sweaty so ignored her/him.
I am also in Ontario DC but I am loving it. I know what you been about things being a little quiet and maybe a little old fashioned.
However I really love where we live as we are in a small village but only 40 mins drive to Ottawa.
I love the weather, we skiied (sp?)and skated all winter and now looking forward to BBQs and beaches this summer.

ktmoomoo · 16/05/2007 21:13

i think ill go over for a holiday first

DaddyCool · 16/05/2007 21:15

hellish - you should check out Cobourg. Lovely town really. it seems to have everything. big, lovely white beach right in town (which is incredibly rare in Ontario)

It's "Ontario's feel good town" said in a nasally ott voice.
