I am looking for other English speakers to meet up with so that my kids speak more English.

DD is 5 and DS almost 3. DD speaks both German and English fluently, but prefers German. DS is not getting so much practice in English as he only hears it from me.

Anyone near Ddorf/Mönchengladbach?

hi macmama, bumping for you...I spent a year in this area before moving south, so am now a long way away.
We had a lot of videos of stuff like Robin Hood, Treasure Island, Rob Roy etc, and at one point, my children's english had a distinctly 18th century feel to it!

Hi Nighty,
thanks for the bump. Aren't you in Munich area? Think I have read one of your posts before. How old are your kids and how is their english now?
We get Mum to send us some videos and she sometimes tapes cbeebies for us. But I would like them to have some english speaking friends so that they have more incentive to keep learning.

hi,
yes, we are in bayern. my children are 3-10. I dont worry too much about their english actually, apart from correcting things, eg shaked for shook. I am the only english speaker they talk to regularly, but it doesnt seem to have affected the older ones a lot, they have good vocabulary.

my youngest is very slow to start speaking, she is only just beginning really, she is 3,5 now. However, she does speak 3 languages; it is a year since she was in France, but I asked her the other day "parles-tu francais" and she said crossly "No I dont francais francais "
So she has got a lot going on in her little head! I am fairly laid back about slow development of this sort, unfortunately the ed system isnt.
There are english people working at vodafone in Dusseldorf, that's the only contact I can think of. Is toytowngermany.com useful for NRW?

macmama73 · 13/05/2007 21:56

Thanks for the tip with toytown, will have a search there.

We are hoping to find someone to teach our kids french. I teach english to kids and I think it would be a good idea to introduce a 3rd language. Still searching for a teacher though, not so easy to find someone to teach kids.

looks as though there are some fr/de kindergroups (maternelles) \link {http://www.botschaft-frankreich.de/konsulate/article.php3?id_article=172\here}, but not in Dusseldorf itself.

@nighty
thanks for the link. Reminded me of the German-French club that I have heard of. I think one of my neighbours mentioned that she was once involved in it
