Bedding in USA

Random but silly help needed. We finally have our moving dates but I'm struggling to decide what happens to our bedding. I know from reading on here that duvets aren't a thing in the States. I love duvets, I hate sheets and multiple covers. I'm not taking any of my bottom sheets because of the different bed sizes but should I take my double duvets (two) and their covers?

We took ours, and Bed, Bath and Beyond sell loads: m.bedbathandbeyond.com/m/category/bedding/bedding/duvet-covers/12017/

You can get duvets and covers in IKEA if you decide not to take yours. They are available in other shops but tend to be quite expensive.
Are you taking your beds or buying there? We took duvets and covers but ours were UK king size to start so looked ok on a US queen. I’d be a bit concerned that UK doubles would be too small for US beds.

DamnCommandments · 11/04/2018 13:28

The duvet itself is usually called a comforter. You can get comforters which are more like quilts, but also those which are designed to be used like ours.

We are not taking the beds, it's more a case of if we don't take the duvets themselves then we won't take the covers. But then the covers match the pillow cases and I slowly lost the will to live while to trying to make that decision over the weekend.

Sounds like we should leave the U.K. double bed duvet in the U.K. I might take the pillow cases.

As you can tell I'm struggling to get rid of things. I've had/kept these covers since DH and I moved in together.

Umm, actually, duvets ARE a thing in the US but they're called comforters. In the 90s, down-filled comforters became a luxury 'thing' and a whole range of linens appeared to fill that niche in the market. Just as certain people here lament the disappearance of flat (top) sheets, in the US, many people quit using them when comforters became common. In general, I find the range, quality and prices of bed linens to be much better in the US.

So take all your bedding and enjoy it. I brought all mine to the UK. I use my US fitted (bottom) sheets on our UK king bed all the time. Are you taking your beds? Depending on what beds you are expecting to use in the US, take your fitted (bottom) sheets too because you can probably use them. The names of the bed sizes (ex: US queen = UK king) are slightly different so check the actual measurements of beds and sheets before combining them.

As mentioned above, you will be able to find covers for your duvets (US = comforter) and not just at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Most pillowcases tend to be 'housewife' rather than 'oxford'.

I hope you enjoy your time in the US.

PS: can you tell where I grew up? If not, start googling. All the states have nicknames. What will yours be?

QueenCity · 11/04/2018 15:29

I know where you grew up Tarheel just as I'm sure you will know where I'm living from my username! Smile

Acrossthesea · 11/04/2018 16:53

Ive been to where you live @QueenCity!

I'll be in the Empire State

Thanks for all the advice. I think being in decluttering hell over the past few months, I tipped over the edge this morning. I will take my duvets. I know from previous ex pat stints, the home sickness at the start can be bad, and this will help me settle in.

Leave them behind - gives you a marvellous excuse to go to Pottery Barn. I get my bedding there, it's awesome.

ksb76 · 11/04/2018 21:03

A double = full (US) so they will fit - one of the only bed sizes to be the same between the two countries. If you have any issues / need any replacements, the white company (US) sell UK sized duvets and covers. Over the past 10 years duvets have become more and more common here.

misssmilla1 · 12/04/2018 01:36

Take the duvets, you might not need them tho by the time you get here (late spring / early summer?)

Worth noting if you sign up on line for the major homeware shops you can score 10-20% off your first order or two.

The big ones are: Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, CB2 (crate and barrel's funkier sibling) Pier 1 (which also does a massive assortment of OTT ornaments which are worth a look) West Elm and Bed Bath & Beyond. They all have showrooms in NYC (which I think is where you'll be?)

MakeItStopNeville · 12/04/2018 04:27

You can get duvets and duvet covers everywhere. As well as Pottery Barn, C&B, West Elm et al, Home Goods (owned by TKMAXX) have a great selection too. Their Ralph Lauren comforters (the duvet itself) are great.

I’m in Canada. Next and M&S also ship here. I’m in a King (UK Super King). DS is in a Twin (UK Single).

Some mattresses here though are much deeper.

claraschu · 12/04/2018 04:56

If you want to save a bit of money and are in NY, I recommend the Century 21 downtown, which has more reasonably priced bedding, and TJMaxx.

SofiaAmes · 12/04/2018 05:33

Macy's on sale is totally the place to buy sheets. UK King is approximately the same as US Queen. Single = Twin and they are approximately the same. Wikipedia has a pretty good summary. I would bring your duvets and covers with you for sure. You can get them in the USA, but can be pricey, so you want to give yourself time to find a good sale.

Bytheseabythesea · 12/04/2018 05:39

Recommend you leave all your UK double.bedding behind and get a US king sized bed and never look back. Best thing I ever did, for my marriage and my life.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 13/04/2018 02:04

I took my duvet - vacuum packed it and stuck it in my suitcase. Grin
