British Army and moving to Cyprus

dancingunicorns123 · 26/03/2018 19:21

My husband is in the infantry and we are expecting to move to Cyprus for 2 years from summer 2019. DS is due August this year. Just wondering if anyone has been based out in Cyprus and if so what it's like out there and what it's like with a young child?

Thanks

I'm not in the same circumstances as you but I spend a lot of time in Cyprus as my parents have semi retired out there.
I've always thought it was a lovely place to be.
I think you could be very happy there.
Where will you be based? Episkopi?

SparklingSnowdrops · 26/03/2018 19:36

I'm a forced wife. I've never been based there but I know people who have been to (and are currently at) Aikrotiri and they love it. They seem to have a good life out there - lots of people to socialise with, a good school. I'd go!

Forces not forced 🙄

The base at akrotiri is lovely, there's a cinema and lots of nice places to eat. The fish and chip restaurant is 👌🏽 if you get fed up of souvlaki!

I have a lot of family living in Cyprus as Cypriots. It's very child friendly compared to the UK outside of the base. My aunt used to take my cousins every single year when they were babies because it was just easier. Going out for a meal, if the babies were crying an older woman who was also a customer would often (nearly always) come over and jiggle the baby while my aunt ate.

I'm not aware of it being that child friendly today but I know from my other cousins it's still a great place for families with young kiddies. Just be sensible with the heat and having a small baby.

Whereabouts are you looking at?

My parents have lived in Akrotiri and Ay Nik and my in-laws have lived in Epi.

Most seemed to love the life over there, I think it’s changed over time (we’ve been over for holidays since living there), but would still be a really great experience.

Forces GF here. My friend lived over there and had a whale of a time, one of her children was born there! And my OH has lived there and also had a great time, he potentially wants to go back but he refuses to take me with him, dammit! Grin

Thanks everyone! Will be based at the base in Dhekelia! Not too far from Larnaca I believe

dancing there’s a Facebook group that you’ll get a lot of advice from, I’ll PM you the name.

I am an army wife as well and I lived in Episkopi for a year. We loved it, it was amazing. Make sure you have a water machine in the house, you can rent them really cheaply and they deliver the big water bottles. They have a nursery for little kids and primary/secondary there, pretty much everything you need is there for you. I hope you have an amazing time in the sun.
