Moving to Thailand

Hi everybody!

I’m George, Mum to 10 month old Chloe. My husband and I are planning to move to Thailand - probably Bangkok - from the U.K. later this year or early next year and I’d Really appreciate some advice please!

I’ve lived in Asia before - in Myanmar/Burma, from 2006 to 2008. My line of work is TEFL, as a teacher, and also in publishing as an EFL Editor. I’m not working at the moment, but would be looking for, primarily, editorial work - either with a publisher in Bangkok, or I’d do freelance work. My husband works in digital development and can work remotely.

I suppose this is really a general enquiry as to whether anyone else has moved from the U.K. to Thailand, especially with a baby. Lots of questions really! Does my baby need travel jabs, and is she old enough to have them? Which part of Bangkok would be good to live in? I’ve visited the city many times but never with a baby, and of course living there long term with a family is very different from visiting for a weekend as a single woman! :) I suppose it would need to be near a sky train stop, although I’m making the assumption that driving would be a pain (tragic always seemed to be horrendous in BKK).

We are very much people who would want to absorb and contribute to our local community, but we are also people who will be living very far away from home and we’ll need some ‘cushioning’ in the form of an expat community! What would people advise for getting in touch with other people/families, finding out about activities and social events etc?

I’m also wondering what the visa situation is at the moment. If my husband and I are both freelancing, I presume there’s no way for us to get a business visa, so what would be the best option for us? Is there a 3-month multiple-entry tourist visa? Or does one of us need to be looking for a permanent job in Thailand?

So many more questions but let’s start with these ones Smile

Thank you so much in advance!

George

I don't live in Thailand, but I imagine your dd will need normal childhood vaccinations - diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, mmr and then add on hepatitis a and b, and possibly typhoid. Even if you don't need them all for Thailand, it does make it easier to travel within the region.
My dcs have also been vaccinated against rabies, but not sure if that's necessary for Thailand.
My dd was just under 2 when we moved to China and had no problem getting all the jabs.

Thanks, ShanghaiDiva! That's a good point about being covered for the region. We're likely to want to go to Bali again, and we have bitter experience of the rabies risk there (don't ask!).

I definitely feel guilty for giving my daughter travel vaccinations (I mean, because we're travelling through choice rather than necessity) but I'll make my peace with it.

Thank you! :)

Those are the vaccinations every child should have, and they also reduce the risk for the locals from your child. No need for guilt.
