I have just moved to the British virgin islands and am completely baffled by their supermarkets. Everything is imported from America and tbh i can't find anything healthy to cook. No proper meat, cheese, cream, yoghurts or fish etc. Everything seems to be reproduced. Any tips on products and what to cook with them to make healthy family meals?

Having lived in the US, I can say that supermarkets are tough.

My advice is to go back to basics and cook from scatch. I was able to get basic meats and vegetables; specific dairy products were a bit harder.

Isn't it funny. As an American, when I first got to the uk, I found English supermarkets to be really difficult to find things to cook from scratch in. Some of your trouble may be what things are called and where they are located. For example, Americans don't have all the different types of cream that the English have. I suspect that in the Virgin Islands people probably get their meat and fish from a local butchers or fish shop rather than the supermarket. Why don't you ask some locals where they get their things. You will also find that the types of fish that are available are different and you will have to experiment to find what kinds you like. Also because it's a hot climate without a large abundance of cows, you may find that there aren't a lot of dairy products. If you want to give me a list of specific things your normaly buy, I might be able to tell you what the American equivalent is or how you can substitute for it.

Also, I think you are also going to have to make some adjustments to your menu to reflect the local produce and climate. I found that I had to make major changes in the types of food that I cooked and ate on a regular basis whenI came to the UK. And in the end, it really was fine, because what was available (10 different kinds of potatoes!!) was more suited to the damp cold climate of the uk than the sunny warm climate of los angeles (10 different kinds of oranges!!). So I made stew instead of bbq'd veg and salads.

Wow, unbelievable that you can't get fish. But hey I found that in Wales when on holiday there, right by the fishing harbours. Sorry you're having such a hard time. Not had the same problems here in Colorado. Have you seen this website Food suppliers

Hey CF how was Blighty then? Didn't you miss us? Seriously though I second what Califrau says, ask around and see where others do their shopping.
