Shall we go to China?

Dh has been offered the chance to go and work in Beijing for 6 months to a year. We're very tempted, but still at the early stages of thinking about it. Have mentioned it to ds (Year 5) and dd (year 2) who are both quite keen. This surprises me as they're usually quite conservative about their lives! Part of me feels ready for an adventure like this - but not sure about the location. Anyone have any insight/ advice?
Thanks

I'd be off like a shot.

We got to travel/live abroad with my dad's job and it was always a plush way to move - removal companies, accommodation allowances, school fees paid, staff included (car and driver, maid, etc.).

It's not forever, and if you're going with work sometimes they even pay for you and your family to travel back home for a break/holiday.

Beijing - big city, very polluted. But what an opportunity, and amazing experience. I would go. Learn as much Mandarin before you go as you can and get into the culture, not just expat exclusivity.
Without a doubt. Would be an amazing experience.

Thanks for that! Just waiting for details of the work contract now.....

Make sure he doesn't get shafted by the work contract.

How amazing. I would definitely go.

Check out the availability of international/ English speaking schools over there. Due to the influx of expats in recent years there was a shortage of places a year or two back.

this can be a great adventure and 6-12 months is great because if you don't like it, you don't have to wait too long to return home.

make sure you get educational allowances as international schools here can be VERY expensive. check out schools on internet already.

make sure hubbies contract has all bells and whistles (car, flights home, language learning etc)

check out beijing expat pages on net to see if beijing as a place would suit you.

Hermit · 21/04/2007 15:39

Are you there already then Juliax3?
Thanks for tips - will make sure he gets this sorted. We have two months to decide so plenty of time to check things out.

My bro and his wife moved to Shanghai with three little ones before Christmas, they are having a great time. As long as it's a good deal I'd definitely go for it.

You have nothing to lose but everything to gain. 6 - 12 months will fly by! Beijing is a great place to live, a very interesting place indeed, and they speak proper mandarin, so if you learn anything before you move out there, at least they will understand you and you will be able to understand them.

Make sure your housing allowance budget is good - $2000+ per month, 1 or 2 flights back the UK per year, having the use of a driver maybe? you will have use of an ayi [cleaner/nanny] this is standard with living in China, health insurance - I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a good health insurance policy here, make sure it covers ALL medical expenses and repatriation.

The down sides are pollution, particulary in the winter when they start burning coal, and you get the sandstorms from Mongolia, its hot in the summer [not a nice heat that you can sunbathe in, its very very humid, and the air just hangs] but most expats tend to go bac to the UK then anyway. The plus sides are, the culture - you never know what you are going to see when you step outside your front door, the parks - oh the parks, fantastic for people watching, the standard of life you can live as an expat is great, it is easy to live in an expat bubble though, if you are willing to stay out the safety expat zone you can gain so much more in the experience.

There will be support groups like Brits Abroad there, everyone in the groups was a newcomer, and groups like this are great for helping you get accustomed to the place and getting over culture shock etc.

Do it!!!

My hubby works quite a bit in Beijing, and he absolutely loves it there. It's a good place for expats, according to his colleagues who have done that with kids.

Air pollution is the only negative he has mentioned.

Thanks for all the replies - we've decided we're up for it! Now however, dh's company wondering whether they can spare him form Europe!!! Why ask in the first place then.....
