OK, off to Aus in June for year plus and I just wondered what things that you take for granted over here are either not available over there or much more expensive. For example some one told me to stock up on painkillers etc as they are pricey over there. Please help!! (btw we will be in Perth)

hitchcock · 11/04/2007 15:52

for us its not that long a commute to work?? no just renting a house up there thought we would try the suberbs and see what it is really like to live in perth what about you what area are you in

hitchcock · 11/04/2007 15:53

would really love to live in freemantle as we loved it when we visited 4yrs ago

suzywong · 11/04/2007 15:55

I' m slap bang between Fremantle and the city, on the river

No, you're right, the freeway means the commute will not be that bad at all. It's just that the ultra suburbs are very different to life in the UK, a bit isolating. Be prepared to drive everywhere and never to see people walkingon the streets and for it to be very very quiet. If you are happy to travel in to the city or Freo or even Joondalup then it will be great.

hitchcock · 11/04/2007 16:02

( swan river) we are 500 meters from the beach so we will be fine. is there anything that i should bring that i really cant get there????

suzywong · 11/04/2007 16:04

Ummm ...well if it's just for a month ... no

It's very windy up there, that's the only thing to consider. Gorgeous ocean front, very rugged, You should have a great month

hitchcock · 11/04/2007 16:06

Flumpleton · 17/04/2007 19:33

OK I'm so sorry but I need more advice, please! I'm desperately trying to rationalise my luggage. Does anyone know versus the UK how ozzie prices for electricals rates. We need to buy a new camcorder and digital camera but wondered whether we would be better off waiting till we got to Perth or buying them in the UK.
Also is Dubai Duty Free any good for those kinda things.....

OP posts:
sunshinefairy · 18/04/2007 07:26

i would wait and buy your electricals there, I don't think there is gap in aust anymore it proved too expensive. I would stock up big time on clothes here for your kids. or your will end up hunting around preloved childrens stores to find next/gap/hm clothes. I would also stock up on mustards, bisto, marmite if you like those products.

Flumpleton · 20/04/2007 18:26

tyanks sunhsinefairy, will do

Flumpleton - does that mean you're flying with Emirates? If so I can recommend them, I've just had 4 flights with them (holiday in between leaving UK and arriving here) and all were excellent. More comfortable than BA, v. friendly staff, (DH was jealous as our DDs got taken into first class for 10 mins to show them what it was like!) and the food wasn't bad either.

Can't remember how old you said your children are but it wasn't until we flew from Dubai to Perth that DH discovered the separate listing of kids movies. It kept ours well entertained (but then they are tv-aholics ). Hopefully, they'll soon be too busy having a great time here to even remember what the square box does...

Flumpleton · 29/04/2007 19:06

Yes flying emirates via dubai. great to hear re friendliness and food etc. i am relying on the kids channels for DS1, as for DS2 god help me, I am really hoping he adopts another family on the flight!!
