Living overseas

If you started a new life overseas did you sell or rent your property at home?

We're emigrating to Australia (Perth) next year assuming we get visa ok. We have a lovely house here in Scotland which we bought brand new in Oct 2015. Emigrating was on our minds when we bought but we wanted to have something here incase a) we didn't move or b) we moved and decided to return.

However so many people seem to just sell up. Part of me is tempted as it's one less thing to worry about insofar as hoping for good tenants and also means we could buy quickly over there and live somewhere that suits us rather than rent somewhere we wouldn't normally live in. But I'm just not 100% certain we'd stay and worry about jumping off the property ladder here...

my tuppence - we have kept our London flat (moved to California 5years ago), mainly because at the time we thought we'd be moving back in a few years and a London property would appreciate enough for us to sell on return and move out of London. That's still my plan even if it isn't DH's but also we've been incredibly lucky to have been able to manage it ourselves the whole time thanks to it being rented to friends or friends of friends

We're now in the fortunate position that we've bought a house here so I think we'll hang onto the London place as long as we possibly can

We moved to Singapore, we weren't sure how long for, and rented our house out. The local estate agent offered several packages in terms of how much they would have to do with regards to the tenants, and we chose the most expensive so we knew it was all in hand. They have dealt brilliantly with any problems that have arisen to do with repairs etc, and it's been no problem. We decided to come back after 2 years and still have our lovely house to move back into. I think selling up entirely in the UK would be unwise unless you are somehow absolutely sure you never want to live in the UK again.
