Calling cool mums from Asia : where to find funky clothing ?

MamanFlo · 11/02/2007 17:58

I am sure you are all cool mums actually ;) I am myself quite into fashion for my toddler, but not high price luxury fashion, just cool and unseen before items with a funky twist. We are planning to move to Singapore in a few months and I was wondering were I would get cool clothes for DD and soon to be (whenever I get pregnant) baby 2. Do you know any shops ? any website that ships to SG ?
How is fashion down there for kids ? Are expats into the bugaboo craze ??? :D

thanks a lot for your help in this very very very important issue :D

Depends what you mean by cool but there is no shortage of shops in Singapore - shopping is the main form of social activity, and there is one particular mall that is just full of specialist baby and children clothing retailers. Some of them are chains but there are some independent boutiquey type places too frequented by expat wives wearing prada. It's not great for maternity clothes though so I'd stock up before you go if you are pregnant. Shipping to Singapore isn't usually a problem but you have to factor in the cost factor. Not sure about Bugaboo as I am a bit out of it fashion wise but if it's trendy and expensive the Singaporeans will be all over it like a rash.

thanks for this first reply
I mean actually NOT the D&G, baby dior, baby kenzo whatever type. I am scouting for young unknown designer clothes and hate to overspend for my daughter (which makes it more exciting to look for actually).
Can you give me the details of the specialist mall ? thanks a lot

Hello I've been in Singapore 4 months and there're loads of kids shops here.

There is one called LIFEbaby which has quite interesting stuff, they also have an interesting household shop.

Or there's \link{http://www.bumwear.com\this one

Lifebaby has shops in Raffles City (mall) and Vivocity (another mall) and Bumwear sells online but I've also seen it in an indepedent boutique at another mall called United Square.

United Square has loads of kiddie shops and a couple of maternity wear shops. But I haven't been pregnant in Singapore so I'm not sure what the sizes are like.

There are some bugaboos about but not as many as I've seen in Kensington!

If you're after European (in particular French labels), you will pay a premium for it.

HTH

cheers

MamanFlo · 12/02/2007 20:50

thanks ! Lifebaby looks fab !
for the french designers (you guessed where I come from ;) ) I guess I will get these from my friends and family

If you enjoy shopping, you will enjoy Singapore

hazlinh · 07/03/2007 03:38

oo what's the name of the mall with the childrens clothes??

Am going down to Singapore next weekend for an interview (I live in Malaysia but MAY relocate...have been scouting around these last two-three months)

Haven't been to Singapore in 11 years so can anyone tell me where to shop?? Where's Mothercare and Marks and Sparks in Singapore??

hazlinh · 07/03/2007 08:38

mrsmalumbas...where are you???

greenday · 07/03/2007 08:52

I'm from Singapore but I live in UK. With the exception of LifeBaby and the usual branded labels, unfortuantely I've found that most baby/toddler clothes aren't as interesting as the ones here in UK/Europe.
The shopping mall Paragon has the upper level dedicated to children's clothes/equipment (as well as the usual Forum Galaria) .. they're mainly branded stuff though.
On my last trip back home in Dec, I found a factory outlet in Holland Village (can't remember the name but it's right on top the POst Office) with a children's dept. Their stock clothes from H&M, Next and sometimes even DKNY, all at a fraction of the usual price. So worth checking it out.
As for Bugaboo, I have one here in UK which serves me very well. But I found it extremely cumbersome to use and unnecessary in S'pore. For my subsequent trips, I've used Maclaren which is much more suited to S'porean concrete
terrain.

greenday · 07/03/2007 09:40

Mothercare's in Centrepoint and M&S in both Centrepoint and Paragon.

hazlinh · 07/03/2007 09:51

hi greenday!
thanks for all the info!!!
any more factory outlets you know of?? I'm a sucker for factory outlets...

Yes I do indeed find that bugaboos were not made for Malaysian concrete...my mothercare jive stroller/maclarens are perfect...

hazlinh · 07/03/2007 10:02

at the risk of annoying you with more questions..can i please please ask how do i get to holland village?

also, er where is centerpoint? is it in the main orchard rd area?

thanks v much in advance!!!

LadyPenelope · 07/03/2007 13:18

Holland Village - best to get a taxi and get them to drop you at the Cold Storage/Shopping Centre.
Centrepoint is on Orchard Road (just down from Paragon and before Plaza Singapora) I'd describe it as sort of the bottom end?

Kids' mall is Forum (although it's going through a bit of a transformation and has a lot of adult brands on the ground floor these days.) As mentioned below, the Paragon on Orchard also has a floor dedicated to kids now as does Suntec.

Maternity clothes - there are a few shops around and if you take a look in expat living there are usually a few independant designers too. (expat living do a kids supplement once or twice a year and that would usually list a few designers.) There is a new place just opened in Forum for maternity wear with stuff that looks quite chic. Dune is another brand for casual pregnancy wear - French designers and good for cotton, casual stuff.

Dune and Chateau du Sable do nice kids wear (very European/French style) - but you will see quite a lot of expat kids wearing it, so it's not very unique. (Makes lovely gifts though and our visitors always buy stuff there.)

Shops in the Forum sell all the big brands (Kids 21 has baby dior etc) and the prices to match. Boutique Nicole in Tanglin Mall has lovely stuff but toooooo expensive for me. I was after a couple of pairs of tights for dd for a visit to colder climes at Easter ... S$100 for 2 pairs!!!! Said no thanks ... will get parentals to buy a couple of pairs in Next and post them!

greenday · 07/03/2007 14:26

HI, sorry! Posted and then went out. Paragon is just opposite Ngee Ann City. They're all in Orchard Road and within walking distances from each other. Centrepoint is close to Somerset MRT station. I've probably confused you more with this information, but do ask locals on the streets, they'll be able to direct you.
I'm not sure of any other factory outlets (Export shops are around, but they don't have children clothes). So far, the Holland Village one is the best I've been to so far. Okay, Holland V is not in town. I agree with LP that its best to take a cab (about 10min drive from town) there as it is not within walking distance of any MRT station and bus directions would just confuse you enough (and me too!). Good luck!

Rojak · 09/03/2007 14:03

Lady P - have you looked in Monsoon / Accessorize? They're clearing out all the kids winter stuff at 70% off - loads of woolley hats, some tights, socks etc.

I didn't have a good look, just cursory glance as have no use for winterwear right now.

I agree, Boutique Nicole stuff is nice but pricey!!

Hazlinh - think there are M&S' in virtually every mall in Singapore - one at Wheelock Place on Orchard, def one in Paragon, one at the new Vivocity mall - the one at Paragon stocks the Per Una stuff.

LadyPenelope · 11/03/2007 02:23

thanks for that Rojak ... dh was in Europe last week so was instructed to pick up a couple of pairs!

hazlinh · 12/03/2007 05:23

oooo there's a monsoon in singapore?????where where?????????? i assume there must also be a Next????? again can someone tell me where it is? I am so starved and desperate

LadyPenelope · 12/03/2007 05:27

Don't think there is a Next. The Monsoon is in Metro Department Store in the Paragon. It isn't big but they have some kids and adult stuff. (It's on the women's fashion floor.) Principles also there.

hazlinh · 12/03/2007 10:29

oh coollllll

they have principles in Malaysia so am not too concerned abt that!

but am mega excited abt monsoon!!

LadyPenelope · 12/03/2007 14:51

Don't get carried away ... I was in there today and it's really quite small ...

hugecat · 12/03/2007 15:16

Hi, I live in Singapore and I'm 9 months pregnant at the moment. IMO it's hard to find what I'd call funky maternity clothes here. Top Shop have a very small range and there are some maternity shops, but a lot of women here seem to like tent dresses!

I bought some maternity clothes from the UK when I was back there on holiday and then improvised with regular clothes from cheap local malls like Far East Plaza.

Any more questions about Singapore, I'll be happy to answer!

hazlinh · 13/03/2007 10:14

oh darn and there i was imagining a huge monsoon shop with lots of nice things for me and dd!!

oh does anybody know if things are cheaper in spore compared to malaysia? like cds, makeup (eg stila, benefit, mac)and shops like loccitane, body shop, crabtree and stuff like marks and mothercare? need to get a new stroller for dd.
