Suburbs with easy-ish access to NYC?

Help!

A move to NY may be on the cards. We're British but have spent the last 2 years in Ohio and before that were in the ME for many years.

I don't know where to begin researching places to live and schooling. Can anyone help with this? We're up against the clock to see if it's viable for us. What are the nicest suburbs with good public schools that aren't an enormous commute from I guess Manhattan.

Take a look at Bergen County towns e.g. Ridgewood, Glen Rock.

Tarrytown is lovely.

Does it have to be a suburb? I dream of living in Park Slope!

Thanks all, much appreciated. I will research these, if anyone else has other suggestions those would be most welcome too. icanteven, I love big cities but suburbia has a lot to offer kids. We're currently in a beautiful suburb in Central Ohio and it has soo much to offer for our children (age 9 and 6).

Stony Brook is a lovely school on Long Island top 1% worldwide 2 hours away from Manhattan on the train about 45-60 mins by car, when I was there if you had an interest in law or medicine many people got offers from Harvard etc.

Oh and for sports it got its first entry into March madness this year and has a couple players that have got to the NFL, for the sciences it really is excellent and does a lot of world class research

Twittwooery - thanks but I'm interested in public elementary schools. Commute ideally 60 mins max by train.

Also take a look at Morristown, Montclair, Summit, Madison, Chatham all in NJ.

Westport CT is lovely--excellent schools, good shopping and arts provision, and nice beaches. I'm a CT dweller (not that town) so a little biased. I believe that it's a sixty-minute commute into NYC.

On the Westchester side, Rye and Katonah are worth investigating. I'm not familiar with NJ at all.
