Americans in London - question for you

I don't know if this is the wrong place to post this, so please tell me if it's not appropriate. I am looking for some advice from Americans living in the London area. We've been here for ages (ten years now) but have yet to find a dentist we're happy with - I've tried several and none have been 'American style' if that makes any sense (I've taken to scheduling cleanings when we're visiting family in the US). Can anyone recommend a dentist in the London/western home counties area (NW London or Beaconsfied or Gerrards Cross would be most convenient for me)?

I have dental coverage through work so I'm not terribly concerned about price - more someone who I can trust. I feel like every dentist I've been to has said, either Oh, your teeth look great, you have nothing to worry about (usually NHS), OR you need X,Y and Z that I know aren't necessary (usually private).

I'm not american, but if it is cleaning you want in the UK you probably need to schedule a hygienist appointment, not a dentist appointment. Dentists do fillings, crowns, root canals, checkups etc, hygienists do the lovely super cleaning thing.

Have you tried the Gentle Dentist in Covent Garden? Easy to get to although not in your specific area.

I'm not American - but there are a lot of dentists in Gerrards Cross (no idea why.. far more than the size of the place would suggest - I think there's 3 down Oak End Road alone!) - including a few expensive private type places.

I always went to an NHS one (Oak End again), and paid for extras so I don't know what the swish ones are like, but it might be worth a wander round to see if any seem to be what you're looking for?

Sorry, ChickyDuck, should have specified - I have seen a hygienist before - just looking for a one-stop shop where I can see a good dentist and get a thorough clean.

Have you been to any on Harley St - Harley St Dental Clinic (which acquired Swiss Smile) is good. But you will have to see the hygienist for a clean, dentist for check ups/treatment (is that what you mean by 'American style', dentist doing both? Mine used to do that when I was little but no more. Even NHS dentists don't do both.

That's what I was trying to say OP, I'm pretty sure that's not how it works in the uk. Hygienists often work out of dental surgeries, but you have to have separate appointments for the checkup/cleaning elements.

You may well be able to find a private dentist who will do both, but it won't be especially easy as I just don't think that is how it works here!

Why do you want a dentist not hygienist to do the clean? Hygienists have all the special tools & training, not British dentists. Is it a specific tooth whitening technique you want? There are many specialist clinics that offer that. Veneers come from the dentist, but sometimes orthodontist would be best bet.
