We are spending 10 weeks in Brissy from March onwards preparing for emigration later in the year. To save me time can you tell me the best shops for travel cots, bikes etc,I know the city centre isnt that big, however it would be useful to have some personnel recommendations and to asve me going the wrong way. Thanks

Baby shops:

YOu can go for specialised like: Babyco or Babies Galore BUT bigger targets like the one at Chermside will do cots, prams, travel cots etc at really reasonable prices.

Bikes - dh got a fab bike from a specialise bike shop but for just pootling around - again - kmart, bigw

Where will you be staying when you are here?? that will make a difference to the shops recommended?!?!

sunshinefairy · 18/01/2007 07:16

There is a specialist babyproduct shop at cooparoo that stocks european brands as does david jones, for cheaper products target or kmart for more choice babyco or babies galore like eidsvold said.

If you are only going for 10 weeks i would take your own buggy and buy a travel cot from kmart, pack one set of your own bedding for baby for familiarity. I would also buy bikes from kmart. It will still be warm/hot in march so you only need light weight clothes and jumper no coats. What side of brissy will you be?

Thanks folks, we will be staying with friends in south Brisbane, near the Mater Hospitals(not sure of spelling) and then moving up and down the coast. Our plan is to suss out different areas in Brisbane, as we have have been up the Sunshine coast and down to Byron which of course is way to expensive to stay but we got married there and would like to be near enough to visit. We want to be able to explore and hopefully get it right although a lot will depend on work. I have the chance to get sponsership with the goverment and they have opportunities all over Qld, but we are pretty sure we want to stay within Brisbane.

from the mater you can catch a bus to Garden CIty - huge shopping centre... and I think it does almost an express to Garden City. Chermside - catch a bus from the city out to chermside.

YOu can work in the greater brissy area although getting out into more provincial areas is also fab. I am a brissy girl but have lived in Rockhampton, Mackay ( loved it!), Eidsvold and back to Brisbane.

Dh works at the royal children's hospital and commutes from where we are - pine rivers area.... not a bad train commute as they do express to the city to and from our station - very handy.

garden city info

they also have a toys'r'us who do baby stuff too.

mymama · 19/01/2007 10:18

< eidsvold - huge coincidence that we live just down the road from each other now but I also used to live in Rockhampton. Born and bred in Rocky until 4 years ago. >

Sorry for the hijack.

giggly I am also in Brisbane and not far from Eidsvold. I would also recommend Target or the specialised baby shops. Babies galore is another good one on the north side. Myer also do some great baby things.

Many thanks folks, great info, right now I have no idea where we would want to live, I would like not to drive to work if possible as I am sick of it I feel as though I spend my life in traffic jams. So part of our plan is spend time looking at diferent areas in the city and the travel to possible workplaces, along with childcare etc.I think I ahve been to Garden City but would ahve been pregnant at the time so cant be certain.
If you are having a nother Brissy meet up can I come ? does it count if you are on a long hoilday?

dh commutes into the Royal childrens Hospital - Herston edge of the city. We live about a 10 minute walk if that to the local train station. They also do express trains from our station into the city. SO in the morning 10 min walk, 30 minute train trip and a rough 10 min walk to the hospital - traffic wise - minimum 40 minute drive, his cost of parking for the week would be the same as his cost for the train ticket for a week - so works out much better. He has time to read and relax on the train rather than dealing with peak hour traffic.

mymamma - I went to Uni in Rocky over 20 years ago. Lived on the northside near north rocky high school

eidsvold · 19/01/2007 23:46

we haven't had one yet - as two of us are pregnant - due Mar and we could not fit it in before CHrissy. Easier for me to come with just dd2...... so now I think unless we can swing one before Mar - no idea when we can get together - of course that does not stop others getting together without me

scully · 20/01/2007 12:08

Having just gone through the 'where should we live' etc, good luck with that! and that's with me having grown up here, but not lived in Brisbane for 14yrs, and it was hard enough. Not too bad really as we made our mind up on our last visit in 2004 and luckily still liked the area 2yrs later
Pretty much anywhere is commutable in Brisbane, especially if you've commuted into London (having lived 50miles outside London and commuted into the City each day, the traffic here is a doddle
For shopping, any Westfield shopping centre would be worth a look, as they will all have the big dept stores, cheaper ones like Kmart and Target and more upmarket like David Jones and Myer. We bought most of our things for our 2 dd's with us, but bought their carseats from BigW (I think), and any other little bits I've needed I've sourced Ebay for

giggly · 22/01/2007 23:09

Sorry folks not been about for a few days, thanks for your info scully, in Glasgow at the moment so no London commute for me
as we get more organised I will no doubt have plenty more questions.
