flight to Oz with 3 year old and 2 year old - help?

We are emigrating to Oz in May - my boys will be 3 and 1/2 and other one nearly 2. I am dreading the flight especially seen as my youngest has nut / sesame allergies. We are going business class as just want to make it as bearable as possible. Think might be able to get a sky cot for 2 year old. Any advice to keep them amused?

We emigrated last year and are flying back from Melbourne to Manchester tomorrow, with a 4 yr old and a two year old.
The flight here was nowhere near as bad as we thought. The children watched TV with their little headsets and didn't wander off at all. The then 3 year old however was sick every ten mins from leaving the house in Manchester to arriving in Melbourne, so in a way the illness was a godsend as it kept him in his seat (and we didn't get off the plabe, even for refueling). The then one year old was also incubating chickenpox, although we didn't know it at the time, so maybe that's why he sat quietly.
It'll be fine. Our flight leaves at MIDNIGHT tomorrow and we're just chilled. After all, it's only 24 hours

Hi hayleyhew! I have just moved over to Sydney with my tribe. I flew with 4 of them aged 13, 4,3 and 16mths ON MY OWN! DH was in Sydney already. Your going b/class so at least you wil have a bit more room. My guys were great they happily sat watchin the tv screen/playing and I let them walk up and down the aisle with no objections from any of the passengers in fact the other passengers were a great source of entertainment You will be fine Where you moving to?

Hi

I do the trip NZ to UK yearly, usually on my own. The inflight Tv works a treat, taking pressies to unwrap at intervals, mini playstations etc (if you are still allowed to take them on the flight). Failing that you could always drug them . I don't but I know people who do!!

DS1 also has a nut/sesame allergy. In all honesty this is our biggest problem. We usually fly via Hong Kong and the airlines won't guarantee that the food is nut free aa they use contract caterers. So the amount of food I take for the flight, stop over etc usually takes up most of the handluggage. Last time I ordered a fruit platter thinking it would be safe but it came garnished with walnuts!!

At least DS doesn't have a peanut allergy alot of the long haul airlines still serve peanuts.

Tribeoffive! You did it with 4. On your own?!

I'm still getting flashbacks from my trip here on my own with just one. 2 year old. Who didn't sleep for 3 days.

Wonders..... How did you go to the toilet and eat? How did you get them all on and off? How did you manage the luggage?

We are going to Sunshine Coast. Hubby going in to study in Nambour. Will live in Maroochydore or Caloundra. You must be supermum! 4 on your own. Hat off to you girl. Will you fly back and fly with us - maybe you could sort my 2 out? (grin). Just found out economy is 1600.00 and business class is 8100.00 so rethinking business class as we could use that money to put towards our house.

the mantra that I kept telling myself - it will pass, the flight will end, I will never see these people again.

We flew night flights and found that wearing dd1 out made a huge difference. SHe slept all the way to Brissy - night flight to singapore - she woke up at the airport whilst on stop over - ran ehr ragged - she slept to Bris.

Big difference business class and even more snotty people to get uptight about children. We have only ever flown economy.

hayleyhew · 18/01/2007 04:46

think your right. Cant be doing with snotty people. Notice time you posted your thread - bad night with little angels? Ours have had us up all night - got yet another bug!

nah - I am in Aus so I post at seemingly weird times but not really

sunshinefairy · 18/01/2007 06:47

hi fly as direct as you can ie via singapore 1 hour stop over or via hong kong 1 hour i have flowen everywhich way and I have to say cathay were the best. 10.00 o;clock night time flight out, night time flight into brisbane from hongkong or singapore, get out on the stop over and let them run, up and down the walkways to tire them out. take some toys not many and rotate them. I also found letting them take their own pillow and teddy helped with the sleeping. I would fly enconomy, houses in maroocy and coloundra are expensive. You will be fine, I have only ever flown on my own with my child they flight attendants are great. Just make sure they drink on take off and landing to stop their ears from popping. the sky cots have weight restriction so you need to check if you are eligible the other alterative is to take on you car seat for they baby to sleep in. I hope that helps.
enjoy the sunshine i hope to be home in brissy by june.

sunshinefairy · 18/01/2007 06:52

or the other alternative is to break up your flight stop off in singapore or hongkong for 2 days that way you will be rested and it will be a real adventure, there is a fantastic zoo in singapore and santosa island. so they are really tired out for the flight into brisbane. A real adventure.

eidsvold · 18/01/2007 08:04

sunshine is right - real estate is very expensive on the sunshine coast.

mymama · 19/01/2007 10:25

We are flying aus to uk in october. We will have dd 9, ds1 6, and ds2 4. We are flying Virgin Atlantic and they seem v good with inflight entertainment.

My ds2 is also allergic to peanuts. We have contacted the relevant areas and they will request no peanuts to be served but cannot prevent people from bringing their own peanuts on the plane and opening them. Best we can get really.

NottsMum · 19/01/2007 23:08

I flew to perth in Nov 05 with my 4.5 year old and 1 year old DDs. My eldest was in 7th heaven as she had her own TV! She was happy drawing too, plus we'd wrapped up some pressies like stretchy toys and the ones that pop up on a spring. Sticker books also went down a storm.

However, have to say the other passengers were very entertaining and our 2 made "friends" with lots of them as they walked round the plane.

Hmm, problem with the allergy I'd agree, so take as much food as you can and buy a hot meal at the stopover airport?

Hope you have a good flight,

Jenny

NottsMum · 19/01/2007 23:10

Meant to ask, where are you emigrating to? We are emigrating to Perth this spring, feeling excited but oh so nervous....

tribeoffive · 21/01/2007 22:30

I wore red underpants over my jeans and a cape and well things just happened!
I flew BA/QUANTAS the Quantas outgoing flight and they were great the head flight attendant made sure that if I needed assistance the crew were available if i needed time out for myself they would help out and as i said before the other passengers were great. One man next to my ds was brill, they became great buddies he helped with the meals tv read his magazine with him. Lots of Grandmas on board they were very attentive.

hayleyhew · 22/01/2007 14:52

Nottsmum - going to sunshine coast - looking at maroochydore. Same her really excited (but hating the idea of leaving family) - dying to get rid of this awful weather - we are all full of cold - again!!!
