You know pork sausages not beef or chicken or hot dogs - Sausages!!!!!!

And where do people buy bread here we have been here for nearly a month and have tried many different loaves and they all taste like salt. Yukkkk. Any Expats from California help pleeeeease.

When we were in CA for 6 weeks last year and three weeks this year, I gave up eating bread - it was that bad

Good luck in your search. Have you thought about baking your own?! (I would have, had we not been in a hotel suite with only a microwave as cooking facility.)

Have you tried Whole Foods??? They sell all kinds of different fabulous sausages. Ditto the same for bread - that's where I buy the bread from. We find that all the bread's too sweet otherwise

Do you have a local deli around you. I'm American and only ever eaten pork sausages. God the others sound gross.

Where in US are you ?

As someone mentioned Wholefoods is a good spot - they do Pork Sausages Irish Style which are good (big size).

You can also order them online - see www.foodireland.com for some examples.

As for bread, I know your pain, I don't know how many bad loaves I bought. White bread particularly hard to get.

Again Wholefoods, or check out Italian bakeries . For brown bread (sliced), generally the 100% wholewheat breads are good.

Good luck!

Have you tried Trader Joes?

mominusa · 22/12/2006 00:32

I buy either johnsonville mild italian or bratwurst. The latter is better. As for bread - it is all way too sweet. I can tollerate sub rolls, wholewheat loaf (just) and after that I usually just buy the fancy bread like french loaf ciabatta etc. Good luck.

I'm in the US and, if I'm desperate for sausages (and I have to be desperate) I tend to buy Bratwurst or Polish sausage from the meat counter in Whole Foods .

As for bread, I make my own. I gave up trying to find something decent that didn't cost a fortune. When I can't be bothered, I fork out and pay an arm & a leg for some freshly baked stuff from Whole Foods (their Seeduction bread is yummy) or Trader Joes . Local bakeries are good too.

The standard (eg Bob Evans) sausages in the US are very herby, and not very satisfying.

Apart from shopping in international stores and finding bangers (the kind you would never buy in the UK), the best sausages I found were the maple syrup ones in Costco - and I say this as someone who normally loathes maple syrup.

mominusa · 24/12/2006 19:02

Oh no, I didn't look that far - just got carried away with looking at all of the lovely sausages etc. I actually live about two hours from here - it will be worth the drive!

Gem13 · 24/12/2006 21:02

Am off on a daydream about chicken and apple sausages from Whole Foods... 6 whole months and not a week went by without my eating them...

BuffysMum · 24/12/2006 21:05

Ok so I'm never emigrating........

Thanks for all the info. sorry I didn't reply, getting broadband installed in the new place is proving to be a bit of a nightmare.
I got a breadmachine for christmas, I know that sounds naff but I love it. We went through a stage of buying extremely sweet bread and fresh baked extremely salty bread - we couldn't win. We did manage to have sausagemeat stuffing with christmas dinner - a small triumph.

But all is not as bad as it seems as we also spent christmas morning on the beach. So even though the bread and sausages are rubbish I wouldn't be anywhere else.

The kids seem to like the chicken and apple sausages thanks for the suggestion.
