Types of Sugar in Saudi, or Middle East

OK, so been out to do a baking shop. Got nearly everything I wanted, but confused by the sugar.
I bought fine sugar, which seems to be like UK granulated sugar. So what is coarse sugar, and why is it sold in such big sacks?? What is it used for?
Any words to look out for to get something more like caster sugar, or do I need to go to somewhere with imports?

Wow. I bet the only logic those bastards have is making you pay more for whatever it is you are shopping for.

Coarse sugar is like coarse salt (we get it in India), and you need a lot more of it to sweeten stuff. It's used in sweetening tea and stuff. I do not get on with it at all being used to the English granulated sugar.

Think coarse sugar is a lot cheaper then regular sugar tho.

Think caster sugar equivalent is called super fine sugar.

sugar

Here in Qatar I found caster sugar in the imported aisle but it was at a premium price.

You can buy the course sugar and grind it down.

In Saudi proper castor sugar will be sold in the "imported" goods section. In Danube it's usually somewhere near the imported sweetners.
There's also a private FB group for KSA for these kind of questions and tips on where to find ingredients or alternatives along with recipes and suggestions on restaurants etc.

Thanks, Ladies. neon any ideas what the group is called? Or how to find it? Fb newbie here.

Local families are inclined to shop for the 'rations' monthly and given so many of them have large extended families it makes sense for them to be able to buy in bulk.

Caster Sugar - Ive never had a problem buying it.

I was wondering about the massive sacks if sugar too! We have used the "fine sugar" in baking and it turned out ok. The caster sugar was very expensive as imported.
There is a Riyadh Foodies FB group which also gives general advise re purchasing food goods in KSA, as well as Riyadh specific advice.

Cheers, Jo. There is an Eastern Provinces group also, when you know to look under Foodies Smile
