Hi Robinpud

The planning has gone askew because I'm having a nightmare with my employers, who have refused my career break at the 18th hour and are forcing me to resign. As I applied over 2 months ago, they've really dragged their heels. also, their reasons for saying no don't really stand up to scrutiny.

I have raised a formal grievance about it and the union are being very supportive. I'm hopeful it will be sorted out but was absolutely devasted last week. If I have to resign I will lose not only my job (which is the best job I've ever had) but also all the benefits that go with long continuous service and a public sector pension scheme which has protected my terms and conditions.

On a positive note, I have made some more contacts in Sydney through friends of friends and through the doctor who is coming back the the UK so my husband can have his job. I now have access to a network of people with kids in the area I will be living, as well as details about playgroups (they run every morning), so it looks less lonely, and you can join me as often as you like!

The couple vacating the job are also selling us quite a lot of their furniture and possibly their car.

I see from your other post that you are taking each day as it comes.....it's a huge logistical nightmare when you are leaving your house for a year and no doubt just as bad when you are house swapping!

Remind me which suburb you will be living in? We are definitely going to be in the eastern suburbs.

Oh poor you Mogwai. I really sympathise. I have been given a career break of sorts.. meaning I have had a less than ideal term this term and don't know what exactly I will go back to. However all those things like pensions etc are more important as one gets older so definitely worth fighting for. I hope the union sort it out for you soon.
Yes it's one day at a time and numerous lists. I am just trying to organise various key documents to stash in safe places and ones we need to take with us. Not exactly my choice of activity for a Friday night but needs must! I treated myself to some time off this afternoon for a coffee with a friend who said " I can't beleive you go in 4 weeks time!" Neither can I; I have a leaving party to organise; Christmas presents to buy and a house to leave tidy plus all the packing. I am trying to imagine us sitting calmly on that flight without panicking about something....

I'm really glad to hear that your netwroking is going well. We are going to be in Revesby which is further west from where I think you will be.

Cat me and let me know how it all pans out. Have you shipped stuff yet? Mine is on the boat!
Fingers crossed for you.

I'll get to Revesby and we can swap notes on all of this nightmare.

It hadn't occured to me that you only have 4 weeks to go...I keep thinking that you arrive in Sydney a couple of days after me, but I had forgotten that you were going via New Zealand.

The wife of the doctor vacating my husband's job has been really supportive in her emails - she remembers being in the same position this time last year. Re the flight, she did say that it was all very relaxing because once she was on the plane it was the first time in weeks that there was actually nothing else she was supposed to be doing. I guess that's true.

She also says they have had an absolutely brilliant time, despite the fact that the salary in Australia isn't anywhere near the salary in the UK, even allowing for the exchange rate/cost of living. Like me, she is also used to working and earning her own money so I think it's been a bit stressful financially at times. At least you have the house and car swap, which is obviously going to save all of those living expenses.

We are having a mortgage payment holiday on our house in the UK, so when we get back, the mortgage will be much higher than it is right now - another reason I seriously need to keep hold of my job!

Keep me posted - remind me what date you actually leave??

mogwai · 26/11/2006 20:37

forgot to say - we are shipping absolutely nothing because we figured it's not worth the cost. We may use air freight or DHL at the last minute if we decide there's stuff we can't leave behind, but it would only amount to a small box.

Keep a close eye on your boat. A colleague of mine has emigrated to Sydney permanently within the last month. Her furniture had been shipped about six weeks beforehand and when it didn;t arrive on time, she discovered that the boat hadn't even left the UK. I'm sure it won't happen to you, but at least if you are keeping tabs on it you won't have any nasty shocks like that one!

We leave here on 24th for xmas at my mum's and then fly on boxing day evening! We only shipped 2 boxes of toys and dh's work stuff that we can't carry round NZ with us. I SO am looking forward to sitting on that flight and FINALLY thinking there is nothing more I can do but enjoy!

(whispers - I've booked to go on a sunbed - I'm practically blue under these layers of clothes - may god forgive me for exposing my skin....)

mogwai · 01/12/2006 22:45

what am I saying?! Harumph - you get a head start by going to NZ beforehand!

I shall be slapping on the St Tropez to avoid colour embarrasment

snowydelight · 02/12/2006 20:33

I'm so jealous of both of you and your imminent departure. Since getting home from our reccy trip last weekend I just want to be on the next plane back to Sydney. Things are happening, and we're on track for April with a vague possibility of a bit earlier, just not as fast as we would like! Keep me posted.

mogwai · 07/12/2006 19:53

Hi snowy

Keep in touch - we'll be settled by april and we can help you out with the practicalities if you need us
