Hi
We are going to visit Auckland in April with a view to applying for residency. I have booked the flights but now just need to find some accomodation in Auckland and wonder if anyone can suggest somewhere that would be close to centre so we can get the 'feel' of it. We are also curious about Tauranga (big scuba divers pre-kids) although the jobs will be more limited. Has anyone visited or lived there?
Any info would be gladly received

Hi anniemac, I know what you are saying about Tauranga and as it stands at the moment it woudl be too small. But they are really pushing it as moment at the NZ fairs in London as being the biggest area of growth. They are planning on it being the 4th largest city within 10 years. But that could either make it fabulous or ruin it - so a gamble either way. Have you lived in NZ?

Our experience with the job market and maybe we are just in the right line of work or lucky is that there is a deficit of highly skilled workers here. Partly due to the tendency of kiwis after uni, college etc to travel (then not always come back) and partly because people can be better paid for their skills abroad especially Oz close to home.

Both my jobs 'found me' through chatting to people in a social context. Jobs do seem to change hands here through an old boy/social network that's not linked to social class or 'the right schools'. WIth both jobs I was able to easily negotiate freelance employment, own hours and not school holidays. I would have been laughed out of the interview room in London.

DH lived away from NZ for nearly 20 years and returned with heaps more experience and skills in his opinion than he could have gained if he'd stayed. This now means far more opportunities here. My one concern, but I don't dwell on it, is that those opportunities may be limited. Smaller country and less companies does in the long run limit you if and when you want to change job.

When we left London DH had a good job but had probably peaked in terms of promotion as there were so many other equally skilled people. In the 4 years we've been here, he's advanced a few times and is now a company director. Highly unlikely if we'd stayed in the UK. So even if we move on, he's now gained experience and skills here that weren't on the horizon in the UK.

Have read this back and it's very rambly but hopefully makes sense!

PS I wouldn't have got work in Tauranga, DH wouldn't have had such a good job so it was Auckland for us.

Sibble - see what you are saying, I think with my DH career in marketing it is almost inevitable we will be in Auckland. So look forward to meeting over Easter if you are around.

annicmac - I have looked on the internet and there are absolutely no marketing companies in Tauranga so I think the choice has been made for us. Will still try and have a look for a few days during out visit though.

Hi faraway tree, I moved to Auckland in July 05 and am returning to the UK in March. Ghosty was a mine of information. We live in Rothesay Bay on the North Shore, if you think of any specifics let me know. We have had a great time here, we are on a 2yr visa, have run out of money and my mum has a secondary bone cancer - hence our return. We are packing as much in as possible before we leave. Let me know if you need anything.

Check out trademe.co.nz for idea of rental accomodation or even house prices, we stayed at the Takapuna Motor Lodge, 2 bed apartment with kitchen, about 20 mins from city centre.

Hi.. I lived in tauranga for 4 years, but am back in UK now due to it being so darn hard to survive as a single mum after my marriage broke down. Tauranga is a very clicky place and even after 4 years found it very hard making any lasting friendships.
I ended up working for myself as the average hourly rate was only $10-$12!! Rent was $240 for a 3 bed home. Even more at the mount.
If you have the money to buy a house and are in a secure marriage then go for it there as it is a lovely place to live!
Good luck

Oh I knew the Goddards by the way. The ones mentioned previously who were on TV's get a new life. They moved away from Tauranga after a year and now live in Hamilton, as it was hard making a break in Tauranga. Julie for long time wanted to return home. But I think they have settled more now.
