Would we be egilible for the childcare rebate in australia

We are going to move to sydney and were wondering if we will be egilible for the childcare rebate. We have the permanent residency visa (can't remember what its number is). I read that you need to be egilible for the child benefit to recieve the rebate. I am assuming that as new immigrants we definitely won't be able to get that.

If you have PR, use an approved childcare provider and your DC are fully immunised then you might be eligible for childcare benefit but it will depend on the number of DC and your income.

For 1 DC the income limit is $149,597, for 2 DC $155,013, for 3 DC it's $175,041.

If you have a permanent visa and are eligible for childcare benefit (even if your income is too high) then you should qualify for the childcare rebate, up to a max of $7,500. You must be working/training, studying or a carer too.

Thanks!

Can you maybe help me with another thing? I have been searching for daycares and getting a bit confused. On one hand many daycares say that they have long waiting lists of about 1-2 years (very scary as we will be moving in about 3 months, with only a vague idea of where we will live and absolutely no idea of when and where we will be working). But on the other hand when I have searched with careforkids.com.au and mywaitlist.com.au there appear to be vacancies available now.

Basically is it possible to obtain a spot almost immediately as it appears from these websites?

Sydney i guess is like brisbane but worse!
I think it would be very hard to find a nursery before you arrive. You will need an address, to know where your work is. There will be some areas that have more childcare spots than others. It will also depend how many days you need. Places are hard to get. There may well be waiting lists.
We have an aupair to avoid daycare. Also far cheaper. Wink

My experience when I got to Sydney was similar - long, long wait lists. Most people go on the wait lists when pg. I paid a nanny full time (that was eye watering along with the serviced apartment I was forking out for while I tried to find a house!) until I got a place in a new nursery which opened up, the most expensive one in Sydney of course - and I didn't qualify for the rebate either!

What age are your DC and where will you be living? The farther away from the CBD the more spots are available. I checked careforkids for the Eastern suburbs and they were all wait listed but I think it's easier to find places out West - www.smh.com.au/data-point/crying-out-for-long-day-care-20121020-27y5u.html#ixzz2WhOVTKEV.

I had a mixed experience of some of the day care centres I viewed - a couple I wouldn't have let DD go to even if they had places, so I would strongly advise that you don't enrol blind.

If you're thinking of private schools in Sydney then you would be well advised to put the DC on the wait list for those too now.
