Don't have a baby in Barbados if you're a UK national

I've just found out the hard way. I've been paying to see a doctor privately, as I'm told be residents that UK nationals are not entitled to free healthcare, however I've recently discovered that the UK and BB have a reciprocal healthcare agreement and so you are entitled to the same public health care as the locals...however I've just had a nasty experience with BB immigration when attempting to routinely extend my visa. Since they only give 30 day visas, you need to go immigration and put in for (ie pay) for an extension. I went, with 35 week pregnant tummy showing, and have since been declined an extension and asked to leave immediately or risk deportation. It seems that British nationals are not welcome to give birth there, at the risk of their babies being "burdensome" on Barbados' - despite me paying through the nose for absolutely everything as a non local (ie doctors visits, heavy import taxes on having my goods shopped over....I now have to find an airline who will fly me out of here...not easy at over 35 weeks...and at real risk of having the baby mid flight. So whatever you do, don't do what I've done and take for granted that as a paying UK national you will be welcomed with open arms!!

oh no that's terrible. They should have told you that sooner. You really don't need this extra stress. Hope you manage to sort it out. How long is the flight back?

BudaBeast · 08/10/2006 06:53

OMG!

Gingerbear · 08/10/2006 07:02

Have you contacted the British Consulate? They might be able to help.

Earlybird · 08/10/2006 07:22

That's awful. It's a wonder you didn't go into labour on the spot from the emotion/stress/upset when they told you of their decision not to extend!

SSSandy · 08/10/2006 09:22

contest it.

admylin · 08/10/2006 09:27

I would also suggest asking at the embassy, or maybe if you prove that you have been a private patient up to now they will see that you aren't in Barbados just for free health care.

covenoveneer · 08/10/2006 09:29

advice here .

States you are strictly advised not tofly after the end of the 35th week of pregnancy.

scarybluealien · 08/10/2006 10:11

rustycreakingdoorbear · 08/10/2006 10:48

Surely if airlines won't let you fly, they won't be able to deport you anyway?

saadia · 08/10/2006 11:25

lol scarybluealien it's OK I had already eaten. It's surpisingly pretty quiet at that time of the morning.

BATtymumma · 08/10/2006 11:28

how ridiculous!

well refuse to leave and at least if they deport you it will be free...and they certainly wont be bale to until after the baby is born so it gives you a little time to plan eveyrthing.
