Homeschooling in Singapore

Popular with the Aussies here, but have any British Mumsnetters homeschooled kindergarten or primary school aged children in Singapore? Which curriculum did you use? Did you add any enrichment classes - Mandarin, sports, Brownies/Cubs for making friends and developing teamwork skills? Any unexpected advantages or disadvantages compared with formal schooling? Do you think children miss out on learning with their peers and having a properly trained professional teacher, or is this outweighed by having one-to-one teaching at home? Could there be problems transferring back to the competitive London private school system at age 11 if we decide to return to the UK? Thanks!

You might be better asking in the HE section.
If you are returning in time for the 11+ just make sure you practice enough of the exam papers and teach verbal and non verbal reasoning.
I'm sure Bond, who do past papers too, actually have a whole section of textbooks on maths and English too.

Personally if you do enough enrichment classes and socialise with friends then I don't feel a child would be hugely disadvantaged going back into the school system afterwards.

In singapore, unless your doc has special needs, you need to apply for exemption from compulsory education and prove that you are following the national curriculum (which is Singaporean rather than British or international). You can get information from the MOE website.

*dc not doc!

Butterflies I'm not sure if this has changed since you left but only Singaporean citizen children need exemption to be homeschooled. At the moment, it's estimated that there are 1000 non citizen children who applied for local schools and didn't get a place and the MOE is telling parents to homeschool if international school isn't an option!

Ah ok, sorry for any misinformation op, thanks salted Smile

Thanks for all your replies. It sounds as though we won't be alone if there are 1,000 new homeschooled expat children each year! On the other hand, our daughter's very sociable, so I'm starting to wonder if she might be better off in a school environment after all. Luckily we still have a couple of years to decide! Thanks, again everyone.
