Short visit to UK from Sydney, without DCs, anyone done it?

We're moving back to the UK next year (early in the year but it's vague at the moment). 2 members of my immediate family are quite unwell and I feel quite upset about not being there for them. I've got the option to fly home on my own for 7-10 days. I know the older DCs will be fine, but I feel quite anxious about leaving nearly 2 year old DS here in Sydney with DH. The longest I have been away from him is 2 nights and he gave me the massive cold shoulder after that! But he has just hit his terrible 2s with a bang and I think it would be a really hard flight, and not fair on him for such a short stay?

Has anyone been through anything similar. Perhaps I should just wait until we get relocated. The flight will be around $2k just for me!!

Life is short, spend the money and see your family.

Cold and grim over here (getting cold and grey). Your 2yo will get over it. Talk about fun of Skype and plan a fun day out to zoo or something when you get back which he can get excited about.

He probably won't even remember it after a while.

Yep, I would go. 2 year old can have quality time with his dad and will be fine. We have a "contingency fund" set aside exactly so that I could go and see family in the event of illness etc - without the DC as it's cheaper and less stressful.

Thanks cold and chinngis wasn't sure if I was being selfish/mad to consider it! Will get it booked.

I don't think it's selfish to want/need to go home and see family members, ill or otherwise. Sadly it's not always practical to travel home with your entire family and it's just one of those things that needs to be done when you live overseas.

I hope you have a good trip and that your family get better quickly.
