Ugh. Watching Hook with DC and just started bawling at the scenes of London. Am I a total loser?!

(Living in LA, been here 2.5yrs)

No, it's par for the course. I lived in Washington and got horribly Emotional over seeing anywhere in Britain on the tv. (Have a hanky!)

helzapoppin2 · 06/09/2014 10:15

I love your name!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 06/09/2014 14:43

What specifically do you miss - or is it just a general nostalgia?

Are you in America permanently?

Do you have a visit 'home' planned?

Mojito100 · 06/09/2014 14:52

I miss it too.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 06/09/2014 18:39

General nostalgia I think - we were just home for 6 weeks!! Got back about 5weeks ago.

We don't know how long we'll be here. Def at least two more years - I eventually want to move home, DH wants to stay permanently so we don't talk about it Wink

Eeek! Been there, done that!

Hazchem · 08/09/2014 23:33

I miss London! I'm not even English but spent 8 years there. I wish lots of the 'lifestyle' aspects of it, corner shops, transport options, shopping, access to groups activities, the NHS, I miss catching a train across the Thames.

MakeMeJumpIntoTheAir · 08/09/2014 23:41

I love your name too, picked up on it straight away. I'm on the other side, I miss being abroad!

fackinell · 09/09/2014 00:03

Not overseas but in Scotland and we may be a foreign country soon!!
I miss London every day but I try to go back every few mths. There's just something about it that gets under your skin.

TheFilthiestPersonAlive · 09/09/2014 01:14

I miss it too. All the bits that Hazchem said as well as the ye olde streets, going to Samuel Smiths pubs in Soho, wandering aimlessly around the centre and the fact that you could visit just about any corner of the city and there would be an interesting gallery or event or shop.

I live in a developing country now and miss the established infrastructure. My city has 10 million people but there are no pubs, libraries, museums, galleries etc anywhere near me! We had legitimate reasons for moving and I don't think we'll go back but I do miss it. A lot.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 09/09/2014 06:04

Ok now you're all making me homesick. Yes it's the wandering of the streets, the cobbles of Old Compton Street, my secret route through the South Bank Theatres, the Horniman on a drizzly Sunday afternoon, summertime in beer gardens and Hampstead Heath, walking across Hungerford Footbridge, crisp autumn days on Tooting Common, Brixton Ritzy, dawn from the Globe or Vauxhall or Shoreditch or Queens Park, dirty Camden Town on a Friday night, sneaky midweek brunch at the Wolesley, espresso Martinis at Balans. The theatre, my work, my friends.

Fuck I even miss Pret!!!

Now I've done it. I want to move home Sad

It will all still be there when you get back, and spending time away from 'home' makes you appreciate it all the more when the time comes to return.

x

America you've made me nostalgic, and I'm back now!
I remember hollering over an episode of Top Gear where they raced a steam train and a car through glorious countryside. Up until then I'd tried to block off my British memory.
I did five years, by the way.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 09/09/2014 15:21

I don't necessarily need or want to move back immediately but I think I need to know eventually we will.

I've been in a big missing Europe thing for months now - the convenience of having so many countries and cultures on your doorstep. California is so for away from everywhere except Mexico!

helzapoppin2 · 09/09/2014 16:06

I was the same. We went on a job transfer and, although I was happy, I really needed to know there would be an end, sometime.
I had lots of friends, and a great time, but got very homesick, mostly because there was so little that was familiar. I also lived in the suburbs, and, apart from one close friend, just about never met many other British people.
In the end, circumstances decided when we moved back.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 10/09/2014 03:04

They have Pret here in DC ATB! I miss London too - we'd decided not to go back this year but I booked flights yesterday. Go in a month and can't wait. If nothing else, I'll be able to stock up on Christmas cards that say Merry Christmas and not Happy Holidays!

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 10/09/2014 03:05

Just thought - trips to New York make me miss London too - must be the big city vibe!

Shakshuka · 11/09/2014 01:44

I'm in New York and I miss London! Other than being big global cities, they're very different.

Wibblypiglikesbananas · 11/09/2014 02:39

With the advantage of not feeling like a village, unlike DC!

Shakshuka · 11/09/2014 02:48

Dc is definitely an odd city!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 11/09/2014 07:44

Never been to DC but surely nowhere is a weirder city than LA?!

I'm off to London this wknd and cannot wait!! Saw a great pic on FB, not sure I can link on phone though but it said

'You will never truly be home again because part of your heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of knowing and loving people in more than one place.'

I nearly cried, it's exactly how I feel. I'm trying to persuade DP to move but then I know I'd miss my family.
Can't bloody win!! Sad
