wigglebumsmum · 15/09/2006 16:52

Hi Medulla not really sure what i want to know!! what is the lifestyle like? is there much going on in camp for wives/families? I'm in winchester at the mo. dh is at the atr and we move in five weeks but then he is off to iraq in nov so i'm just a bit anxious at the mo about the move, new baby and being a single mum!! are you with the army/air force???

We're here with the RAF. Unfortunately Dhekhalia is quite a way from Akrotiri (although I expect you'll fly into here). I'm not very familiar with Dhekalia but if it's anything like here there's lots to do. I'm sure there'll be mums and babies groups going on and the best thing ot do is to go to everything. You'll soon make friends. I've been here since january and I feel settled now, I have plenty of friends and although DH is away at the moment there's plenty of support. If you fly out with the RAF I've founf they are better than any commercial airline, not from glamour side but from the help side. The stewards are fab. I'm travelling home on my own with my two little children in a couple of weeks and I know it'll be fine because I'll be looked after (your baby will also get a seat to itself).

Life in Cyprus for us is great. I've found people love it or hate it. The weather is just cooling down now and it is quite pleasant. For a couple of weeks in the height of the summer it can be hard going but it doesn't last long. Facilites are there, lots of different clubs to join, sports (esp water sports, I've just done my speedboat course and learnt to knee board). Food is ok, there are no preservatives on the fruit and veg which is great but because of the heat it doesn't last long so I tend to do my shopping daily. Not really sure what else to tell you but please keep asking me anything you want to know.

Last note - childrens clothes are very expensive so get down to Tescos before you come out and stock up for your baby. Adults clothes are ok but the Greek fasion can be a bit eighties!!!

Thank you so much!!!! yes we're flying with raf and have already been told that junior will have his/her own seat which is fab. Thnaks for the point about clothes- we shall def go out and stock up once we know if its a boy or girl! its good to hear that you have made friends and there is support. I have loved living in winchester but it hasn't been a great posting as far as meeting people goes and arriving in a new country with a new baby is daunting enoough with dh posting to iraq! i take it you can get a good range of baby products in the naafi etc.

someone did tell me that there is and m&S, Next and monsoon in cyprus. Do you know if this is correct and if so what the actual stores are like. Might have to go on a spending spree before we fly out!

OP posts:
Medulla · 15/09/2006 21:25

There are the stores you mention but all the British prices are converted to Cypriot pounds so for example a dress in Next priced at £15 sterling will cost £15 cypriot thats about 20% more. In M&S not only do they convert it but (especially babies clothes) they increase the price!! The yps are not very good about exchanging things either so whatever you buy make sure it fits!!!

The NAAFI stock the basics but they can be pricey. The local Cypriot supermarket stock Pampers nappies (cheaper than the NAAFI) if you use formula hte NAAFI is the only place you can get British brands otherwise the Cypriot supermarkets stock the Greek versions.

We're here until at least January 2008 but you just never know what could happen!! Feel free to ask anything you like. Have you been in touch with the HIVE there? They could also provide you with a bit of local information too.

Oh Good Luck!!! You lucky things. I was at Aktrotiri until Feb this year. We had a great time. Cyprus is fab and so child friendly. I had dd2 there, and dd1 was only four months old when we moved there. Will you have the baby at TPMH? Is it back open now? Let us know how you get on. Hi Medulla. I am jealous of you. Sounds like you are making the most of it. I thought I was ready to come back to the UK but we miss our Cyprus lifestyle so much.
