Sorry couldn't resist, especially as I'm bored at work and you know... idle hands...

Astrophe - you have me in flap now, is that true about the car seats? I am using mine from the UK. Where do I find out more?

eidsvold · 12/09/2006 10:33

we are still using our britax seat from the UK - although looking at the vic govt website it does say that it should conform to Australian Standards. Dd1 has been in the seat for the 2 years we have been here and it will be passed down to dd2. As it is we have to buy a new one for dd1 that costs a lot of money - due to her size and need for five pint restraint still - no booster seats for us yet. Dd2's car seat will be passed down to the new baby.

flannelettepyjamas · 12/09/2006 10:55

Also worth considering is the timing of the flight. Something I am grappling with for my next trip to the UK in November. Wondering whether the 14 hour stint with Singapore, leaving at 10am is better than 2 x 7 hour stints with Emirates leaving at 7pm ( Manchester - Singapore segment).

MrsBigD · 12/09/2006 11:25

I guess that depends on whether you expect the kids to sleep

OP posts:
katyjo · 12/09/2006 11:29

We flew with emirates, who were great though didn't have any kids at the time!! It was better for us as flying to glasgow meant only 2 flights not 3 (14hrs to dubai from melbourne then 7 hrs to Glasgow) We sent excess baggage with their freight company didn't cost very much and was on the same flight. They had a great entertainment system, watched all the disney films!!

sydneygirl · 12/09/2006 11:33

We've only just noticed that our tickets to the UK in Jan (for a holiday) are at midnight!!! With an 3 and a one year old. That's with Qantas and that, to me, is a blummin' nightmare!

Astrophe · 12/09/2006 13:44

humpy dumpy, I'd try the RTA for advice. I think you ae very unlikely to get pulled up for it, but the Aust seats are safer. We shipped ours out here to the UK for that reason, only to discover our car doesn't have the anchor point for it!

tribeoffive · 12/09/2006 21:55

Hi guys!
glad to see the thread is going well
Gosh air lines , car seats need to add them to my 'list of things to think about'
Had first visit to vet today NOT ME personally but the CAT thought i would get first piece of paperwork completed so as to get permit to apply for the cat to enter Oz - WRONG! got to wait for blood test results etc also looks like the cat will be in quarantine for 90 days now Didn't get the bill today either for the consultation thats a bit worrying got a funny feeling the cost of tha cat gettin to OZ will def. be more than all of us gettin there
May require major rethink

MrsBigD · 12/09/2006 22:19

doing a list of things to look into? Hmmm now there's an idea LOL Time to grab a notepad and trawl through all the Australian threads to make notes next time I'm bored at work. Oh that would be tomorow the ;)

eidsvold · 12/09/2006 22:34

oh yeh we are very picky with bringing animals into Aus.

When I was thinking of moving to the US - thought about taking my dog - that was fine - not a long time in Quarantine and as long as she had a rabies shot that was okay BUT if I ever decided to bring her back to Aus - 6 month stay in Quarantine. Decided I could not do that to her.

It might be worth rehousing the cat and then you can get one when you are here.

eidsvold · 12/09/2006 22:36

we found that as dd1 was at 14kgs - by aus standards she could be in a booster seat that did not require being anchored so we figured - having her seat attached by seat belt and her anchored by 5 point harness better than a booster and just an adult car seat belt.

tribeoffive · 12/09/2006 22:42

seem to be addicted to looking at domain.com.au HOUSES! HOUSES! SUBURBS!SUBURBS!nearly midnight here and im still lookin DH not happy
Does anyone know of any other site i could visit re renting houses in Sydney?????

Rojak · 12/09/2006 22:43

Sorry < quick hijack > - Sandcastles - can you let me have the number for Spore Airlines in relation to emigrating?

We are not emigrating but DH has been offered job in Singapore with no time frame on the contract.

So I would be keen to find out if we could get some leeway on baggage allowance as would like to take some toys etc with us (while we are waiting for shippers to arrive with the rest of our stuff)

Thanks!

Sandcastles · 12/09/2006 23:03

melbournemum · 15/09/2006 01:12

sunnydelight
we've flown with quite a few airlines with our two boys between the UK and Australia and around Europe. Once we flew with Singapore Airlines we swore we'd never fly with anyone else again. They are just very child friendly, very tolerant, very kind and seem to go the extra mile to help out those flying with children. When we arrived in Australia they had us down for 'special assistance required' just because we had a baby and a toddler. We didn't request it, they just offered. I meant we were collected in one of those great buggies, driven through the airport, whisked through customs and just generally taken care of. I can't recommend them highly enough (in our experience anyway)

arfishymeau · 15/09/2006 01:51

The number of times I've staggered through an airport with a car seat on one shoulder, travel buggy on the other, baby in sling and pushing a mountain of luggage is untrue.

Can't decide between Singapore (buggy) or Emirates (wi-fi).

Yep - Wi fi wins. Surfing has to win. I can webcam DD having a tantrum mid-flight to share with all my friends for extra sympathy. And have a 'Arf does a 24 hour flight with her DD alone again - live as it happens' thread going.
