The title really says it all

We're planning on moving to Australia in about 18 months and I'm trying to sort out a timeline for especially dh to follow re things that need to be done before burning all the bridges...

Hi Mrs BigD, Where are you moving to? We lived in Melbourne for 2 years, having been back home for a year we are planning to head back. So maybe we'll see you there!
As far as jobs are concerned it depends what you do and what type of visa you are on, my dh went with work and had a business visa sponsored through work. He started enquiring about jobs in october and we flew to Australia on the 3rd of december! so all happened very quickly. I didn't look for a until january and started by the end of the month so that was quick too! Good luck!

going to Sydney so won't be neighbours LOL

I'm good at any kind of office work, PA, Office Manager and the like and used to do IT desktop support before babies.

Will be there on temporary visa as a family member of a NZ citizen, that being dh Am allowed to work on that visa, just not entitled to some social stuff

Hi there,
I used to work in recruitment in Sydney and used to deal with lots of people who had just arrived from the UK. It's probably v hard to apply for specific roles b4 you get there as you won't be available for interviews etc.
You can, however, pre-register with the larger, intrnational recruitment firms (Hudson, Michael Page etc). Aus is booming at the moment, with almost zero unemployment so you won't have any problem finding work when you get there. You can always temp for a while initially while you settle in and work out eactly where you'll be living etc.
Not sure what your hubby does though, so can't advise there.

thanks Syd, dh is a Senior IT technician/Systems Administrator/Team Leader and will be promoted shortly to Operations Manager

Huge demand for IT specialists in Syd I'm pretty sure. Worth contacting some rec companies for him too. Check out www.monster.com.au and see which companies seem to be advertising the most and send them and email or check out their websites. Many of them have spcialists to deal with people who are on their way over and will be looking for work on arrival - once again, Hudson, Michael Page and Hayes.

ah I stop fretting for now then

I contacted an international recruitment company (Hays) before I left to come to the UK. They arranged an interview for me with the appropriate woman in London so I saw her the day after I arrived in the UK. There were so many jobs at the time that I didn't need to arrange one in advance and I must have started working about a week after I arrived.

It's definitely worth checking what the job market is like - I would say about 3-6 months before you go, contact the recruitment agencies in Sydney or perhaps some of the major international ones. I also found Hays helped with my CV and got it into a format more acceptable to the UK market so they may help you that way aswell.

MrsBigD · 05/09/2006 17:18

thanks foxinsocks... rejig my cv? oh boy took me long enough to get it to where it is LOL

we emigrated ( well dh and dd1 did - I jsut returned to AUs) with no jobs and a mortgage to start paying.

Dh did not start looking for jobs until we got here and then actively pursued a job - he started one within a month of us being here.

another question re work, or rather earning money... does one need a Tax number or what ever it's called (you know here in UK it's National Insurance No.) before starting work or can one start on a temporary one?

Oh and have another problem at the moment (also posted that on the other thread)... trying to persuade dh to do a reconnaissance trip to Sydney in about 12 months to check out neighbourhoods, schools etc., seeing that he needs a holiday anyhow and I will have had 2 this year on my own, sans enfants and hubby. However, he doesn't see the point because a lot of info is available on the net and we can just arrive there, rent and then have a look. And also schools will take kids if we arrive 1/2 way through term... no problem (he said). IMHO we should check out stuff beforehand because what if we don't like the area we're renting in but kids already settled in school?

I don't think dh quite grasps the gravity of sorting out schools etc. as so far here in the UK I've always taken care of stuff like that... I think the intricacies are beyond him iykwim

So how can I nicely kick his butt?

(and excuse the spelling, very tired today and suffering 'guilty mama complex' as left ds at nursery today and he cried bitterly when I left... I'm sure he's fine but those little blighters do know how to turn it on don't they)

you will need a Tax File Number - like your NI no - you can get that online from memory dh applied online and he got it quite quickly.

MrsBigD · 08/09/2006 10:54
