USA O-1 Visa

Hi Everyone,

DH has been offered a job in the USA, but we need to apply for an O-1 visa. Has anyone had experience of this? We do have some of the paperwork done as we were part way through getting all the documentation together last year, with a different company. It seems quite complicated, though!

We are all very up for this move; we've visited and were shown round by a relocation guide. We absolutely love the area and the job is ideal for DH. We're really, really excited, but worried about the visa as we've heard that it's one of the tougher ones to get - even though DH is very experienced, in a senior role on international projects, etc.

Also, any top tips re moving would be greatly appreciated Smile

Hi Natasha it's a new company and there are no more H1 visas this year so it's the O-1 - again! The lawyers advised us previously, so we've been gathering together articles and so on about projects he's worked on that are in the New York Times, etc as well as awards and websites/magazines that are more industry specific. He has quite a niche set of skills and the required testimonial letters attesting to his 'outstanding ability', but I don't know anyone who has been through the process. We will have different lawyers this time, but it would be lovely to have a more personal perspective on the whole thing.

I've been reading through that thread; some interesting points - though the OP's marriage and reluctance to relocate are, understandably, major issues that are clouding the other issues. I'm as keen as DH on the move and we are a very close family, though I can see that a big step is potentially stressful no matter what. Very exciting, though!

I've not joined that forum, but I will do - sounds very useful, thanks.

I think, if everything went okay, that we would want to stay permanently. I know that a move to a green card is possible, but I'm not sure re priority. I don't know all the details yet, but I think the company would probably help with the green card as it's a key position and not an easy one to find suitable people for as it's very specialised.

It's hard not to get caught up in the excitement and to keep our rational hats on! I'm not even sure how the tax system works - must investigate...
