I am sooo jealous. DP and I are in the process of applying for work and temp work permit at the mo, though we will prob end up in Alberta.

Vancouver is meant to be fab, really friendly and lovley climate.

Meggymoose · 18/08/2006 15:41

Really Callisto? What's the attraction? Have you got a young family too?

I loved Vancouver when I went for a visit. A friend (her dh and ds) lived there for a year and had a fabulous time.

Daughter is 16 months and we want to move somewhere that is more family friendly and give her a better childhood and (IMO) better schooling. Canada really appeals to us.

Meggymoose · 18/08/2006 16:02

Wow Callisto. So brave. I'm so anxious about this!

Don't be anxious, loads of people do it and you are only there for a year! Look on it as a fantastic adventure in a wonderful city. You will get to explore the rocky mountains, see bears, wolves, moose in the wild, go skiing, skidooing, canoeing, drive huge trucks without a guilt complex, make loads of new friends. The list is endless.

The question is whether you would rather regret doing something than regret not doing something?

jabberwocky · 18/08/2006 16:08

Oh, how wonderful! Have been there for vacation and would jump at the chance to live there for a bit. And it's not a bad drive to Seattle for the weekend which is very nice, too.

harrisey · 28/08/2006 14:27

My BIL and his wife have just left Vancouver after living there for 4 years (no kids). We visited 3 times - it is a fantastic place and I would jump a the chance to live out there! Victoria is not THAT near to Vancouver (30 mins to fery, then 2hr ferry ride to Vancouver) but Vancouver Island is brilliant too (have beenthere 3 times as well as have a schoolfriend there) and we loved it.
If it is just for a year I would jump at the chance, it would be a real experience for you and the kids.

Meggymoose · 28/08/2006 15:47

Gosh it sounds great! Why am I so reluctant? When you refer to Vancouver Island do you mean the island that Victoria is on? Did you visit Victoria Harrisey? What was it like?

Victoria is a bit of a tourist trap for Americans looking for Englishness, tbh, but quite good fun. Vancouver Island is great though - theres fab countryside, beaches, mountains, sea ... you could have a fab time.

I was born in Vancouver and I love it even though I've lived in Europe most of my life. I'd be thrilled to go back there to stay. It is wonderful (although not perfect!) & yes, parts of Victoria are nauseatingly touristy but you find that anywhere. Can you visit before deciding to move?

Meggymoose · 30/08/2006 10:09

Probably can't visit. I guess for 1 year we will just have to make the most of it. It's quite an opportunity so I think we just have to go with the flow!

i'm canadian and I think you will love it. It doesn't get very much snow there so you won't get a taste of a real canadian winter (weather will be much like UK )but excellent skiing close by (some of the best in the world) and close to the mountains if you like hiking or mountain biking. Very laid back culture in the province of British columbia. We tend to tease them a bit as being the potheads/peacenic/lefty types of canada but the people are nice and easy going. Enjoy.

meowmix · 31/08/2006 07:12

Oh god thats my dream posting. GO you'll love it. It regularly tops the best places to live polls.

What an exciting opportunity, meggymoose! Vancouver is supposed to be really wonderful --- fabulous food, lovely setting, great culture.... Does anyone know how the schools are around there?
