Questions about British citizenship for baby born abroad

Vespar7 · 23/03/2014 16:27

Hi,

I live abroad and am due to have a baby in July. I was just wondering if anyone knew the rules regarding British citizenship for my baby? I am a British citizen but I have heard that while my child will be entitled to a British passport, their children will not. Also regarding university fees would it make a difference if the baby was born in Switzerland or Austria? We could do both because of where we live.

Thanks

imagine trying to get a replacement from syria right now, or libya, or iraq. a lot of paperwork vanishes during wars, at least the uk records go back to the uk and are computerised.

Luckily, the passport office holds details of how you are eligible for a British passport.

So in the event you lose this b/cert thing, as long as you have your passport....or of course, also your birth details.

can i pm you a question about nationality?

The country I live in provides a birth certificate that looks like it came out of a vending machine...not in English. Flimsy as anything. Yes, getting the uk one wasn't cheap but I am very glad I did it, for me it was extra security.

SquinkiesRule · 09/04/2014 18:59

I did the registration for all mine born abroad. We have used them as birth certificates in UK for ID for the older boys getting NINO's
Definitely worth doing.

i have one child who was born in outside of uk but country child born dosen' have British Embassy how can i apply British pass for my child

lifeisunjust · 10/09/2017 18:21

Yamusse, please read the thread and use google, your answer is there.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 19/09/2017 15:54

Yawmusse, if you are British through being born in the UK or through naturalisation then your child is likely to be British by descent and you just apply for a British passport by following the guide on the govt website. When countries don't have consular offices to deal with passport applications, there is usually a neighbouring country that picks up the post (as it were)
Lifeisunjust-MN would quickly die a death if we a resorted to Google rather than just y'know, helping each other out when we can, don't you think?

PineappleScrunchie · 19/09/2017 16:05

I know it was said a few years ago but what Raspberry said upthread about delaying applying for British citizenship so that the child gets "full" citizenship rather than just "be descent" wouldn't work. The child in that case would be British by descent regardless of what the OP did. You don't need to apply for it, you just are at birth if you are eligible.

PineappleScrunchie · 19/09/2017 16:08

All overseas British passport applications are made by post now, even if there is a UK embassy/consular office Yawmusse.

Its pretty straightforward and you can usually start the application online and just post the supporting docs.

We are in the same situation. My son was born in the UAE. He has a British passport. If he marries someone who is not British or who is in the same position as him, then any children will not be British. I think that whole scenario has too many 'ifs'. In any case, him and hia wife can just go to the UK and have the baby there ans it solves the problem.

exexpat · 19/09/2017 16:24

This is a zombie thread, everyone - OP's baby would be three years old by now.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 19/09/2017 16:32

We're answering Yawmusse's post now I think.
I used to be DrankSangria so was on the original thread!
