Does anyone live there? Or know anything other than the basic internet info? Ds will have left for uni so just DH and myself. In an ideal world (and IMHO its always good to start there and work down) I'd like to live in a villa with a garden ;-) (haha) near a few restaurants. I'm ok with street food but sometimes I'd like to sit down somewhere nice. At the moment we are not sure where DH will be located for work so I dont have any areas or anything to chose from. I know medical care above the basic level is a plane ride to BKK.
Any thoughts?

Gentle bump. Can't believe there is still a place in the world mumsnet hadn't penetrated ;-) although I do know the internet there is very poor.

Hi, I live in a BKK but travel to Yangon a lot for work. I also know a lot of people (local) who live there. What do you want to know? I know there are very few expats there. Food hygiene is shocking (even by Asian standards) so I would be avoiding street food. There are a few totally amazing restaurants, will try and get names for you. The people are often scared, even now. And in most nice neighborhoods, your closest neighbour may be directly involved in oppression of the people. The wealth gap is appalling, and the medical system is non existent. But the people are some of the kindest, nicest people I have met. I have made friends for life there.

Hi our best friends (Englis/German with 2 DCs) moved to Yangon from Botswana in July, they had also lived there 10years ago. Sure they would be happy to give you some suggestions. PM me & I'll put you in touch.

Thank you both so much. I will pm you later today. It's 6.50am here and I'm just leaving for work. Many thanks again.

I live in Yangon. There are tons of ex-pats here actually. I believe that unless you have crazy amounts of money you will be very disappointed with regard to housing. It has got insanely expensive recently so it's very hard to find a decent place.

Wow, we have a MN member in Yangon! That's really something.

Akuabadoll, regarding expats, are they mainly from one or two countries? Or a lot of different ones. Bkk is changing really fast now with expat make up, it's getting more multinational, which is good, but can mean making friends is more difficult, because people tend to hand in country groups here.

I ate at a really superb French restaurant the last time I was there, but I can't remember the name. I'm told it's quite famous - is that too vague to for you to pinpoint the name? I have friends visiting in a few weeks and wanted to recommend it to then. It's in a lovely old house, huge high ceilings, and really outstanding food. Loved it.

You also have much nicer bread than we do in Bangkok!

Le Planteur is the name of place you are thinking of boss

Ex-pats from all over the world as I see it. I can think of people that I've meet from 20 or so different countries off the top of my head.
