i know a mobile would be easier but our experience is that it is not that cheap.

Pay phones are 50c for as long as you need to talk - off peak long distance within Aus is fine as well. INternational - better to get a phone card and use that to talk to the UK - can usually be used at all phones.

there is a cheap pay as you go sim card available from Vodaphone but not sure of call charges. Are these your UK phones?!?! I know I wanted to try and use my UK phone when we first got here -e ven going to the company that was the Aussie equivalent of my UK phone ( pay as you go) was no help.... had to unlock phone from the UK to use an aussie sim. So we bought aussie pay as you go phones. Might be worth checking with your mobile carrier.

Dh has a non pay as you go and he just got international roaming - somewhat expensive but he mainly used it for texting - again might be worth checking your mobile carrier.

sorry can't be more help. As I said previously - using calling cards and public phones or even ones in hotels are in our expereince not expensive - especially as you are staying in large cities rather than remote little towns.

THanks for the reply

DH is getting a new mobile this week and we were going to get it unlocked before we leave so that we can put any SIM card into it

SO we could try that and put an Aussie sim card in

And use our BT calling card thingy we had from 2002 when we went "round the world"

SO Vodaphone is all over Australia is it?

I assume vodafone are all over Australi.

Telstra and Optus are the big two - telstra was the original telecommunications carrier until the industry was deregulated. Optus then was the next big one to come along.

Vodafone were the ones I could supposedly use my one2one phone on.....

will do another search - know someone is doing cheap sim cards - can check for you.

is this worth considering?!?!

here

or this -

phone card

will try and find more for you later when after swimming.

Hi RTKM.

Your best bet is to use a calling card for phoning home. You can get 600 minutes of talk to the UK for $10. There are many different ones - just go into a newsagent and say which country you will be calling the most and they will give you the one with the best rate. Easy peasy!

If your handset is unlocked then you can choose a sim card from any supplier (3G is handset dependent though). I like vodafone - they do some pretty good bundles including some very cheap international calls and texting.

I'm not sure what to suggest about the Cook Islands - I have a feeling you might be roaming with your Australian SIM when you get there. Best to check in a vodafone store.

Avoid the 3 network, it's shite (and that is a professional telecomms term )

Have a safe trip. We'll look forward to seeing you online at 'normal' times.
