Going Home (forever) (or at least a while)

Well, we're now counting the days rather than the weeks until we leave Oz.... It has been a lovely year - thanks to the Aussie mums for helps and advice; I'll miss being part of the overnight posters. I think it's actually harder leaving here than it was leaving the UK mainly because the people we say goodbye to here we'll probably never see again whereas last year it was just for the year.

Things I'll miss:

Sunshine and heat
Relative cost of living
Lifestyle
Outdoor swimming pools
Wildlife (lorikeets are so much more attractive than pigeons)
Fresh fruit and veg mostly locally produced - so tasty
Likewise beautiful cuts of meat (and my particularly lovely butcher)
Ds1's school. State schools are so fab here
The no shoes lifestyle (will be a shock for ds2 to have to put something on his feet again)
The fanfare that greets the news broadcasts on ABC radio - still makes me laugh 12mo on
Family friendly ethos everywhere
Lack of litter and graffiti - we are still amazed that the many, many free bbq's are always so well maintained and clean - just can't see that happening at home
Loads of great parks with good play equipment
Sunshine and heat!

There are some things we won't miss - fickle TV schedules and lack of decent programmes, not v good radio, lack of choice of newspapers, power cuts when it's 30 degrees overnight and no fans or aircon, lack of shops and shops shutting at 1pm on a Saturday (that's a TVL thing), the fact that we are so far from anywhere - it's not that easy to pop to anywhere interesting for the weekend from here and internal flights are really expensive.

And it will be nice to be just that bit closer to friends and family

Sure I will think of more as the week wears on. We're having a garage sale tomorrow - fingers crossed that everything goes.

Oh

We'll miss you HA! Have a safe flight back.

MN is a different beast in the daytime. It's scary out there! Have fun with all the active convos

eidsvold · 07/07/2006 03:33

I bet you get back and start working on how to come and stay forever..... your soul is ours!!! [evil cackle]

yup - there are other things you will miss and won't even realise until you get back to the UK and slowly little things you will miss.

Just think though - TVL so different to big city Aus too - so you have experience a real aussie town. COuntry city/town mentality.

Try not to miss us too much.

What about State of Origin - all the sea of maroon....... and those damn cockroaches

apronstrings · 07/07/2006 03:41

ooh such an interesting therad - we are comeing back to uk next year - job signed etc and i keep saying its almost more scary than when we came. I am worried that england wont measure up as it does in my mind. really worried about the weather, the price of things, dd1 -who has specal needs and gets fab state help here, the free summer pool, and the fact that the manicured environment is actually soooo pleasant to live in.

USA tv also has really fickle schedules, lol - we have often started watching series only to have them totally disappear. They turn up on a.n. other day, time etc.....its so un english.

hannahsaunt · 07/07/2006 04:17

Hmmm - there is a real country mentality here - it can be quite scary at times! I have no doubt we'll be back, hopefully for longer, but definitely not forever. It was a bit of an eye opener seeing the boys with their grandparents when they came - I couldn't deny either the dss or the dgps of each other for more than 2-3 years at a time esp since getting here isn't just a quick hop over the Atlantic (have my sights set on Canada at the moment ).

It really is the sun though - my skin has never been so good (excema) and I'm dreading the next Scottish winter.

Next time though I'm going to hire a legion of slaves to do all packing and selling! This garage sale malarky is a military operation and the thought of even looking at a suitcase afterwards is making me ill. Will need a holiday to cope with it all!

Odds on how long it will be before we're back for a holiday ???

Oooohhhhhh - and Origin was FAB!!! (I sat next to Johnathon Thurston when out for a farewell dinner with mums from g1 ). Shame no one from home will understand that.

oh god.. your so right about the garage sale thing.. atm i really feel like i cant face the getting back.

I understand the skin thing I have pretty bad psoriasis(even though I cant spell it) and it clears right up in the good summer weather.

eidsvold · 07/07/2006 05:11

wonders how Jonathon Thurston qualifies as a school mum

enjoy the last few days you have here. Know what you mean about getting back. We have decided to try and save for a trip back Nov 07 before dd1 starts prep.

hannahsaunt · 07/07/2006 09:49

Most items now in a fit state to be sold - good thing is that I have absolutely no sentimental attachment to things - it's making packing up quite clinical which is quite therapeutic. It's not like we're selling off the family silver or long cherished wedding presents. More like $10 dinner sets from K Mart!

Handsome RFL players is one perk of socialising in sunny TVL

Hey HA, how much did you sell?

We're counting down to you coming back (though ds is very solemn/serious about returning scooter to your ds!!)

Can't wait to see you...

hannahsaunt · 08/07/2006 08:47

Well, most things sold but still stuff left (anyone want a DVD player or speakers???). What's more frightening is seeing the volume of stuff designated for suitcases...excess baggage may be an issue! At least the garage sale has covered the cost of shipping the current four boxes-ful home.

OP posts:
eidsvold · 08/07/2006 09:23

hannahs aunt - I shipped stuff via DHL - you pay a set about for a 35kg box from memory and it wasn't that dear - used it for linen, teaching resources and all sorts of things. They also do door to door - drop off boxes - you pack and fill out paperwork, they deliver to house other end.

See if I can find out more about it. Know it worked out cheaper than excess baggage. I just arrived with boxes and they suggested this service.

dhl here

give them a call - might be worth a go.

We used this company coming from UK to Aus - door to door again.

excess baggage

hannahsaunt · 08/07/2006 12:04

Hi Eids; thanks for the links. Unfortunately because we're rural there are no drop points in TVL...No worries though as sending things sea mail with AusPost is relatively cheap - about $90 for 20kg which is great. Boxes are good to go on Monday along with the ever growing list of tasks! And all dh has to do is work overnight and sleep all day until we arrive at the airport on Thursday! Not sure who has the better deal.

Busy day tomorrow complete with 8am breakfast bbq (we'll have to leave here about 0730 - not my best time). All the locals will have been up since and at it since 6 though and think 8 is a concession for my being non-native. Don't think these early starts will be missed
