Caling all Aussie Mums....(and dad's if there are any out there!)

Ok, so here I am in sunny (not) Australia. I need to ask some of you Aussie mums a thing or 2!

  1. Milk?. I can?t work out what is what. DD needs full fat milk & I like half fat milk. All I can?t find is 4% fat milk for DD and 1% for DH & me. Is there anything else, or is this life, as I now know it? Which is the nicest drinking milk (I can?t help the fussiness)

  2. Decent mayonnaise, without having to pay $6 for English Helmans. (Yes, I did pay it, but only because I had to have it)! I want something nice & thick & creamy. The stuff I brought (Kraft I think) was 97% fat free (mistake, just picked up first I saw) was horrid.

  3. Nappies. Only needed for nighttime. I see Huggies are a popular brand here, but I don?t like Huggies AT ALL! We shop at Cole?s or Woolworth?s, so if anyone can recommend a good brand that would be great!

TIA

All I CAN find

Have forgotten how they describe the milk thing but I'm sure if you ask they'll explain - they definitely have full fat, semi-skimmed etc.

Mayo - the Aussie stuff is yuk! We used to shop in Coles and the best stuff we found was the mayo that's made in Canada. Can't remember the brand name but it says on the jar. It's much closer to the stuff in the UK.

Stuggling on the nappies front. I really liked the Huggies brand so didn't use anything else.

melissasmummy · 06/07/2006 13:02

thanks for that, will see what I can find.

  1. Milk - full fat - sometimes called Whole milk - I just buy the woolies or coles brand for my two dds. For dh and I - we usually have skim milk BUT for you - like half fat - sometimes called trim or lite milk. Again I used to buy a more expensive brand - Physical ( low fat - dark blue label) but just buy coles or woolies brand now.
  1. Mayo - I buy Coles own brand - seems fine. Have also used Praise Mayonaise. I use the 97% fat free but that brand is fine in the full fat.

  2. Nappies - Babylove nappies are just as good as huggies - also have good training pants that are better than the huggies pull ups. I tend to use them more as they are a little less expensive than Huggies - at coles or woolies. Good as I am still buying for two.

Hope that helps.

saw that as to best drinking Milk - dd's don't shoe the difference between more expensive milk and supermarket own brand. I only have milk in my coffee or cooking so can't comment on ours but dh seems not to mind whatever we get. However he will not drink straight skim - has to be Physical with the added vitamins - says that is better. They do a low fat as welll as no fat milk.

eidsvold · 06/07/2006 22:20

don't shoe ?!?! what was that - should check my typing! SHould be show!

hannahsaunt · 06/07/2006 23:17

Hi

We use Dairy Farmers full fat milk and it's fine - dark blue caps for FF and pale blue for semi skimmed, pink for skimmed.

Nappies - babylove are good. We use Ecobots for ds2 at night and they are fab. Much better than any eco nappies you get in the UK.

Mayo - all aussie stuff is yuk (sorry) - more like salad cream than mayo. Best is Neil Perry mayo which you find in the chiller cabinet by the salads in Woolworth's (can't get it anywhere else). It's pretty good.

HTH

eidsvold · 06/07/2006 23:19

Hannahs aunt - dairy farmers is a qld brand I think. Just check for that though Melissa'smummy

SW mayonnaise....it's the only thing that comes close to normal mayo, the rest tastes like salad cream....blue milk is full fat ( so I thought, haven't looked taht closely on the bottle, don't think they've got a half fat)....Woolies own brand nappies are REALLY good....good luck...

Thanks guys, That's really helpful.

Have got some babylove nappies today, so will try those. Will look out for other stuff next time I am around the supermarket!

Has someone already told you to learn to make your own Mayonnaise?

arfishymeau · 10/07/2006 11:06

OK, I'm still getting used to brand shock. I realised last night that you can't get pump dispenser toothpaste (not a tragedy in its own right, I was just surprised!).

After a few mayo disasters we now get SW Whole Egg mayo from woolies, which tastes identical to the mayo I used to buy in Europe.

Milk - read the label! Some milks are made of ingredients! At the moment I'm getting Parmalat Full Cream organic (green carton) and the same in skimmed (blue).

Also nearly cried when I realised I couldn't get easy-up pants for DD when we got here. She's out of nappies now, so can't help.

eidsvold · 10/07/2006 11:24

But aldi do like an easy up pant - 4yo dd1 is in - sad as they are getting too small although they say they are for children up to 25kg and dd1 is only about 15kg!!

But I miss the easy up pampers and tried to con dh into buying a few packs and bringing them back from the UK - can't see why he wouldn't. Hopefully dd1 will be outta day nappies by the end of the year.

Arfisy - I though colgate did a pump type toothpaste - or is it no longer the case??

suzywong · 10/07/2006 15:36

It is like being in Chechnya in the 1980s sometimes - the archaic things you can get and the mind boggling things you can't get.
And the ADDITIVES! Sooooo much is put in to food here that has been banned in the EU for years
As eids says, read the label you aren't in Kansas anymore

arfishymeau · 10/07/2006 23:06

GRRRRRRR! I had no idea that Aldi do them. I struggled for months with normal nappies - I gave up with them as soon as DD started crawling and never got the knack. I nearly had a fit when I realised I'd have to use them again.

Hmm. Might have to check the toothpaste aisles. It's very tragic of me, but I got intrigued by the new toothpastes with fresh strips in and wondered if they were also launched in the UK. I nipped over to the boots website to find they weren't! Then I noticed the aquafresh and all of the other brands that weren't here.

Stop now arf. You are not doing yourself any favours.

eidsvold · 10/07/2006 23:17

arfishy - I use sensodyne - expensive but I have sensitive teeth. Used to use the fresh stripe stuff.

I used to just put dd1 in nappies - then found the aldi ones ages ago - thank goodness - especially for her teachers and aides at sn kindy and kindy - makes it so much easier changing her.

Also Baby Love do a training pant - cheaper than Huggies and theya re somewhat more absorbant..... with elasticated sides but not the velcro'ed idea like Huggies.

melissasmummy · 11/07/2006 12:47

suzywong, would love to learn how, never thought of that! will give it a bash & report back. I am making marmalade on saturday with FIL, that should be a laugh!

Here in WA - best milk is Browne's by far (Hi Lo is the semi-skimmed that I like).

Mayo - Thomy (German, and not cheap, but worth the money).

Nappies - my kids are 11 and 13 so long past that stage.

Pump toothpaste dispenser - Colgate Total is available here in Coles and Woolies.

Just wish Woolies and Coles did Internet shopping in WA - miss my Tesco's shop - even after 6 years.
