Aye, hopefully fatowl!

Hi everyone. I am after a bit of advice. I live not too far away from Singapore and and am 12 weeks pregnant. The country Iive in does not offer and pre natal testing at all so I am looking to fly to Singapore to go to Kkh hopefully for the harmony test. I was wondering if anyone has experience of this at Kkh and also can anyone recommend a hotel nearby at all? I will be coming on my own for a very quick whistle stop stay! Thanks in advance

fatowl · 30/09/2014 01:40

Hi Batteryhen

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
I'd ask on one of the Singapore threads, there are several posters from Singapore on this board, but they might miss your post as it's Malaysia specific.
I don't know the Singapore hospitals at all (except Mount Elizabeth)

batteryhen · 30/09/2014 01:44

Thank you, I will hunt down a Singapore thread :)

Barbie1 · 30/09/2014 20:22

I've just had a baby Shock

34 weeks.

Can't fault this hospital.

Hey guys, just to say.....we've arrived!! Literally just got to our temporary accomms in KL, knackered but chuffed to bits to finally be here!! :-)

Laptopwieldingharpy · 15/10/2014 12:49

Batty, look for a hotel around cityhall, the lower end of Orchard up to Scotts road & even marina square. All 5-10mn to KKH.
Book your appointment 10am-2pm to beat morning traffic & shift change!

fatowl · 15/10/2014 13:41

Welcome to KL Tracey- bit hazy at the moment, give us a shout if you need anything!

Any advice on signing up for mobile phone service out in Malaysia? Trying to decide whether to just get a new SIM for my phone I brought with me or to sign up for a monthly contract (if there is such a thing here?)...Digi have been recommended but I'm floundering a bit! Be good to know I can be easily contacted when out and about, especially when the kids start school after half term.... Thanks!!

fatowl · 17/10/2014 16:28

Maxis is the biggest and probably the widest coverage.
Digi and Celcom are the other two.

I would just get a Maxis pay as you go sim for now.
Unless you have an Iphone in which you have to go on a contract, and as a foreigner you have to pay a big deposit.

I have a Maxis contract on my iphone but I find I am using the phone less and less - I use Skype and Whatsapp, so I have the minimum contract and basic the basic each month.

fatowl · 17/10/2014 16:29

You need to take your passport to buy a Sim, from any of the Maxis centres. There is one in Midvalleey, bangsar Village, Bangsar Shopping Centre.

BonnyFitTracy · 19/10/2014 04:18

Thanks fatowl...at Suria KLCC yesterday (doing the tourist thing!) and ended up getting a Digi SIM as we saw the store there...priority was a local mobile number in case of emergency/school contact. At least with a PAYG SIM I can always switch to another network to try so will look out for a Maxis store. At which point will this stop feeling like a lovely tropical holiday and reality kick in? ;-)

Barbie1 · 19/10/2014 04:45

Welcome to kl bonny!

I've been here 7 weeks and had our baby nearly three weeks ago and have spent most of the time in nicu with him as he was born at 33 weeks...

We haven't real up explored kl up to this point, we have been to the zoo and the bird park and we totally felt like tourist!

If you need any thing please shout, not sure how much help I can be but I can try

LoopyLoopyLoopy · 19/10/2014 04:46

Wow Barbie, congratulations! Was it Pantai in the end? Did everything go ok? How are you now?

Barbie1 · 19/10/2014 05:47

Loopy is was awful Sad

Waters and membrane went at 2am...both kids in bed so we had to wake them and take them with us, had to stop for petrol...it was so stressful.

No time for epidural so was put to sleep. Had to wait 8 hours too see him and was told it was touch and go.

Spent the last 2.5 weeks doing daily commutes for feeds and tests.

He was realised on Thursday. We are still under paediatric care and have to have a few more days in next week...

He was 33.5 weeks when born. We were very lucky he gave us the warning at 31 weeks and has that course of steroids for his lungs.

Least it's half term now so I can get into a routine before the school run starts again!

When are you off?

Sorry for derailing the thread Blush

LoopyLoopyLoopy · 19/10/2014 05:58

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that :( Glad he's home now. We're leaving in December so just starting to get sorted but bit of a gynae problem means I'll be spending the day in the Pantai tomorrow...

How is he getting on weight and health wise now?

Laptopwieldingharpy · 19/10/2014 07:51

Barbie congratulations! sending lots of hugs. Take it easy and look after yourself! You went through something quite difficult there. Glad to hear its all good now but please do take time to process it all and pamper yourself.
x

Laptopwieldingharpy · 19/10/2014 07:57

barbie if I may recommend something....have you considered traditional confinement?
Its a beautiful gift to a new mother. No so much for slimming etc but I found it incredibly comforting to have someone look after me after giving birth away from family and friends. It's one of those women only rituals that is truly soul soothing and you are lucky to live in a place where its available.
traditional binding/confinement

BonnyFitTracy · 19/10/2014 10:16

Oh my goodness Barbie1, what an absolute nightmare; congratulations though! You take care of you and yours; thinking of you....PM if you need anything and I'll try to help if I can; even if just a chat x

BonnyFitTracy · 21/10/2014 13:37

Hey peeps, can any of you based in KL tell me (roughly!) how long the LRT takes from around Ampang Park to Bangsar on the Kelana Jaya Line- surely not just over an hour as Google keeps trying to tell me (for only RM2.00? Can't be right, only 7 stops?! DH insisting it must be wrong!!)...ta!! :-) x

fatowl · 22/10/2014 01:21

About 15 mins once you're on the train, but if you are travelling at rush hour you might have to wait to get on a train.
If it gets very busy it's not unknown for them to close the station for half an hour. (You'll get to live this kind of Malaysian logic!)
Rm2 is about right.
You'll want to think about getting a Touch and Go card- prepaid card you can use on the LRT, road tolls (TnG queues always shorter than cash queues) and most Car parks (midvalley is the only one I can think of that doesn't use it)

BonnyFitTracy · 23/10/2014 05:59

Thanks ever so much fatowl! We plan to do some exploring further afield than KLCC sans car.....loving it all so far (though the midges/mozzies seem to be finding me particularly tasty even though I'm in the middle of KLCC, not heading out early am or dusk and using DEET repellent on exposed bits!)....kids start school on Monday so looking forward to getting some time to myself! :-)

fatowl · 23/10/2014 06:28

Hope they have a good first day, let us know how it goes

Barbie1 · 23/10/2014 08:43

Bonny how are you getting to school on Monday? Glad you are still not put off by anything!

The mozzies love me too Sad I've been an expat for years and never got bitten until we moved here...

BonnyFitTracy · 23/10/2014 10:30

Barbie1, I'll taxi them there and back on Monday - school bus as of Tues all being well... BTW on the mozzy-front: I just keep joking that i'm just too darn tasty...keep hoping they get bored of me and move on (DH and DC's not affected - yet!)! ;-)
