Moving to Singapore with 2 Year Old - What to Take?

Moving to Singapore for 18 months (or more) in January with our 2 year old. Looking for advice on what to take, eg her bedroom-full of toys, books, garden toys, etc. None very valuable and would be costly to ship, but most of it has been presents from friends and family and hardly used so it would be a shame to give it away so soon! Any advice?

You can buy everything here but at grossly inflated prices ( especially books and kids toys). I would bring most stuff, especially as I think it's really comforting to have your own things around you when everything else has changed. Not much point bringing outdoor toys if you want to live in a condo but inflatables for the pool are worth bringing!

I wouldn't bring outdoor toys as you may not have private outdoor space here (although you could bring little ride on things if you keep them inside). Def bring books and any educational stuff eg puzzles, as these are quite pricey here. Bring good quality children's clothes.

There's definitely no shortage of toys here (there's toys r us, early learning centre, ikea, mothercare, lots of small local toy stores) but good quality stuff isn't cheap. When we moved I packed some of DS's bedroom things like wall posters into our suitcases so we could put them up as soon as we arrived.

I wouldn't bother to pay for storage for children's stuff. We put DD1's age 10 bike in storage when we came to Sg for two years thinking it would be the right size for DD2 when we returned. DD2 will be at uni before we return so that bike won't be much use.

I wish I'd brought some photo albums with me as I miss being able to see them. Definitely bring baby books as when DC start school they are often asked about when they were little.

Leave the cold weather clothes, Bunnikins china and outside toys at grandparents' houses, and bring all the DCs other favorite/essential things would be my advice.

Thank you all for your advice! I'd better warn grandma and grandpa we'll be bringing them the garden toys...

I've recently moved to Singapore with a two year old, and we are still waiting on our shared container to arrive. I wish I'd taken the opportunity to cull more of all our things, including DS's toys.

But I had an attack of guilt in throwing out/donating because they're his things, given to him by other people. Silly me.

What we did pack for him in his suitcase were the toys he played with most (Duplo, small Brio train set, Schleich animals, a few teddies and half a dozen favourite books).

Once the rest of his crap toys arrive, I think the things that will get used will be the rest of his books, his bike and not much else. I wish I had taken the chance to get rid of all the horrible battery-operated noise-making junk given by MIL loving relatives.
