Moving back to the UK - travel insurance problem

We've been living in Australia for a couple of years and are now heading back to the UK. We've booked to stop off in Dubai for a few days but now come across an insurance problem.

Our UK insurance company won't insure us - and as 457 visa holders once we leave Australia (DH leaves his job which gives the 457 visa) we wouldn't get back in.

This must be a common problem...what do you do?

Yo can normally buy travel insurance with your flight. It's fairly cheap (less than £20).

Thanks Gracie - Qantas are saying what our insurance company in the UK are saying. If the worst happened we would be repatriated to Australia. We need cover for repatriation to the UK.

Anyone else come across this and managed to find a solution?

There is a solution, some of the ex pats on www.britishexpats.com bought insurance for the long trip back to UK on the Queen Mary. If you do a search over there on the "moving back to UK" section I'm sure you'll find it.

Try looking at world Nomads they normally do a expat insurance policy which will repatriate you to the UK.

Surely even if something dreadful happened and you were sent back to aus, you would get an instant e visa at immigration and all medical care would be reciprocal?

CarlaBrooni · 08/10/2013 15:18

Chloeb - what good would that be in worst case scenarios. Being at the opposite end of the world when your family and home are at the other side?

Thanks all for your other suggestions, I'm still checking them out. I've sent a message to Nomad Insurance but haven't heard back from them yet.

Can't your DH's company insure you through their company policy?
