Hi Astrophe

Yep, been here for 5 years but have just applied for spouse visa for DH and we are hoping to move back to Oz by Christmas.

Hi Eidsvold...I've 'seen' you around but wasn't sure if you were an Aussie or a Brit living in Australia! Are you in Qld?

Hi Lukesmama, what does your dh think of the move? Have you enjoyed being here? 5 years is a long time. We are planning 3 1/2.

I like it here but it just seems like forever before we go back - no visits planned due to finances (want to spend our money travelling to Europe, not blow it all in a single flight to Ausralia!) and two small kids.

We've been here (Derby) for 6 months now and I'm really homesick at the mo, for the first time.

As I said, I like it here, but I can't help feeling like its just a break from my 'real' life, which will continue when we go back to oz. Did either of you feel like that? Any tips?

well my life turned upside down whilst in the UK - I had gone to work and travel - met and marrried dh, had dd1 ( sn and heart defect ) and was about 18 weeks pregnant with dd2 when we returned. That was all in the space of 4 years

I did look on it as an adventure when I left Aus never dreaming I would meet and marry and the rest. I wanted to live and work somewhere other than Aus and so tried to see as much of the UK as possible and do things that I would not have done whilst living in Aus. Being a history and english teacher - went to Stratford ( shakespeare country) you know things like that I could experience. I can see what you mean about feeling like it is a break from your life though.

If you get homesick for aussie things...

australia shop this helped me!!

I think it probably took me a full year to not really feel lots of homesickness and then things like - my brother getting married or things like that would make me feel homesick for a bit.

I am in Brisbane.

Hi

Yeah I definitely felt like it was a break from my real life for ages, wasn't until I was pregnant with DS who is now 2.5 that it really felt like England was my home(for now anyway).
I have to say though the 5 years has gone really quickly, make the most of your time here, go travelling loads and just enjoy it.
I am excited about moving back. DH and I actually met in Oz and he has spent a lot of time there so he is looking forward to it. Although for him missing his family will be the biggest issue.
Anyway enjoy your time here and have a great time with your mum and dad when they come to visit.

bonds clothes - that is one thing I missed when having dd1 although I got a steady supplyl - especially of vests - she was a summer babe and nappy and vest was all she needed at times.

Astrophe · 28/06/2006 15:24

you mean singlets?
