Surely French is more common in Brussels? The Belgians prefer to call it Vlaams btw, probably because the Dutch are so rude about them.

Brussels is 92% French and 8% Dutch when it comes to those who register to vote (they have to chose to register one of the 2 official languages of the region, the only real means of measuring). Is your family Dutch?

Huis van het Nederlands can supply you with information on all the Dutch courses available in the region and many are free to Brussels residents.

You can learn Dutch very cheaply or free in the Dutch speaking communes just outside Brussels (and probably some of them in Brussels). I did a course in Tervuren, which was good.

IF you're resident in Brussels, this in one of the biggest FREE schools for learning Dutch. You can get the courses for free if you fall into other categories too.

Dutch is well worth learning if you're going to stay any length of time and go into work. Majority of my brussels colleagues were dutch speakers. We also preferred the flemish towns and areas once we had been in brussels for a bit.
During my time there, the language was always officially called Dutch. The people are Flemish, they live in Flanders but they speak Dutch. Same as people in the US speak English.

I lived there for many years and never needed Dutch in Brussels but of course you don't have to go far out of town before you really need it. Depends on where you plan to live your life I guess. I would definitely start by getting your french really up to scratch.
