Getting a council house when moving back to UK

Has anyone been this cheeky and simply rolled up and declared themselves "homeless"?

It seems we could possibly (probably) be awarded a council house in the area we're moving to but I wanted to know if anyone has any experience doing so?

If you are happy to spend months if not years, in bed and breakfast with hot and cold running damp, then go right ahead.

ChicyMonkey · 03/09/2013 14:34

No, this area does not have that type of shortage.

Presumably you will have lived somewhere else when abroad. This means that if you left that property of your own accord you have made yourself intentionally homeless. Under those circumstances the local authority has no obligation to house you.

I would like to think you would go to the bottom of any lists.

burberryqueen · 03/09/2013 14:37

no because you would be 'intentionally homeless'

jellybrain · 03/09/2013 14:38

Depends on your reasons for giving up your previous home. You might be found intentionally homeless for example in which case you wouldn't get helped. Then there's the local connection criteria and the new 'discharge of duty' to the private rented sector etc.
Might be possible in an area of very low demand but not in most of the South East.
You were joking though weren't you?

ChicyMonkey · 03/09/2013 14:39

No, why would I joke?

As you are probably all already aware, there are loopholes in the loopholes and our circumstances (on paper) would indicate that we are not "intentionally homeless".

X posted with everyone.

Ok sorry. Your best bet would be to look at the Allocations policy/ scheme for the area you are applying to. Most are available on line. Anyone can apply for council housing but, in many areas you are extremely unlikely to get it unless the council has a statutory homeless duty towards you.
