Hi All Am sure this has been done to death but did a quick search and couldn't find any threads (?) Anyway, we are in Auckland and have been for 11 years. DH has the opportunity to relocate to Melbourne. It wasn't something we saw coming as he's only been in this job for 3 weeks and it wasn't discussed at interview so we can say no but it is an opportunity which ties in with the possibility of me having no work after the end of August. Visas are not a problem as we all have NZ passports. So if you could chose anywhere to live in Melbourne where would you chose. He will be setting up the Melbourne office so has the option of location. Schooling is important - I have 2 dss 8 and 13. The 13 year old is currently in private school studying Cambridge (not essential just local High School are not good). We love the beach, outdoors stuff, the boys play rugby. We have a few acres here but I have a phobia of snakes (!) so think urban would be better, good access to shops.... Happy to train to work if not too far and transport good. I would probably be looking for work at a Uni or Hospital????? TIA

I lived all over melbourne, literally moved every six months.
Loved Malvern, Prahran and Glen Iris.
The private schools are around Kew though if I remember rightly, depends how independent you want the boys to be in terms of getting themselves to school etc.
The ruck sacks with the laptops in them seemed to weigh as much as the kids themselves and I used to feel sorry for the ones running to catch the tram in the mornings.

if you want the beaches/private schools then Bayside is your city, with its suburbs. I'm not sure what kind of shops you want, but Bayside is accessible for the CDB down the very lovely Beach Road. You won't get acres, but there aren't many snakes - I think a brown snake was arrested on the beach at Hampton about 4 years ago.:o

The suburbs mosman mentions are all vair naice too, but not beachside.

Bayside is not cheap. How much dosh have you got?

Thanks, I'll have a look at those areas. Private is not an essential he only goes private here because we are zoned for dreadful state school - government report 'the board is taking the issue of student safety seriously'. I would be very happy for him to attend a good state school.

dosh - not sure - we are hoping they will pay for rental but havn't started those talks yet. Thought I'd take a look at rental prices in good/suggested areas, get a feel for the place and start negotiations there. We have 2 houses here (our house and a house at the beach) ideally we would rent both ad rent in Oz. Realistically probably mid range not mega bucks and very happy to save some money by being in zone for good state school Grin

We live in Hampton, which is between Brighton and Sandringham on bayside. It's 20min to CBD on train and lovely. Expensive though!

Moonee ponds or essendon. Good schools, goods shops, good restaurants, good public transport.
