sarahinphuket · 16/05/2006 00:46

we have Fanny chewing gum here

suzywong · 16/05/2006 01:17

Spray@Fanny gum

Over here there is a brand of cheese called C*on. Lord knows how they get away with it, I hate seeing it in the supermarket.

BudaBabe · 16/05/2006 02:03

Cheese in Hungarain is called "sajt" - pronounced "shite"! (and some of it truly is!!).

Having lived in Thailand, Vietnam, Bulgaria and now Budapest I must admit I like living in different countries. Expat scene usually good. But am hankering after living somewhere "normal"!

DH just been offered Kazakstan!!!! Has spent the last three days telling me I haven't said "no" yet - I may just get it tattooed on my forehead!

I ain't doing that one!

hannahsaunt · 16/05/2006 03:52

It's fun and we'll do it again sooner rather than later I hope. But it's not home... The thing I miss most is the BBC - radio & TV - and the spread of good newspapers. Otherwise it's just fine Smile

scienceteacher · 16/05/2006 07:17

LOL, MrsMills about the rude words.

I lived in the USA, so most of the words were not particularly funny (although the food SAJT would have fitted well for most of the food Grin )

But it was funny saying bugger and bollocks to people, as they took no offense. I'd never do that in the UK.

SoupDragon · 16/05/2006 07:57

I don't live abroad but I do have a nice packet of Bonka coffee on display in my kitchen. Makes me snigger.

ggglimpopo · 16/05/2006 08:01

I have now lived in five countries and feel rootless. I have held four different passports and do feel strangely "citizenless".

I am now staying put in France.

And yes "abroad" is a big place......

nailpolish · 16/05/2006 08:08

i was in new zealand for a while

felt like id gone back in time about 10 years

didnt like it, came home with my tail between my legs Blush

BUT ive never met a friendlier bunch of people

SSSandy · 16/05/2006 09:12

nailpolish, had the same experience in NZ. I was in Windy Wellington, where were you? Used to have to go hunting for my clothes line, got uprooted and blown down the street a couple of times...

As to living abroad generally, I found if you're on good money, it's good everywhere. Otherwise not. I'd even tackle Kazakstan if I could afford to live the life of Riley (not sure how ragey life gets in Kazakstan).

Meowmix, Gulf should be good, depends on the country. Wouldn't like it long-term myself but for say 2 years, I'd be into that.

nailpolish · 16/05/2006 09:45

i was in Papakura, 10 min train ride south of Auckland

it was a great place but, as i said, a bit 'behind'

glad you found the same!

meowmix · 16/05/2006 10:51

we're going for 3 minimum (unless we hate it/war etc). it'll be hot, dusty, awkward, tax-free and annoying. Whereas London is dusty, awkward, annoying, hot, taxed and damp!!

Frenchgirl · 16/05/2006 11:15

'abroad' can even be England
it is for me

weird place, strange people and customs

but you get used to it after a while

although could never get used to pork scratchings Grin

ggglimpopo · 16/05/2006 11:16

Frenchgirl - where did your dh get a job?

Frenchgirl · 16/05/2006 11:31
